I'm in the camp of those who believe if you paid for the flights you alone should benefit from the compensation!

All I can say MrTom2009, is that you need some new friends.
...I'm a very friendly person and available to go on a free flight pretty much anytime. If we get delayed you can keep the compensation and I'll even treat you to a drink or two from the airport bar whilst we wait!

For friends who accept a gift holiday then expect compensation & 'permit' me to do the legwork?

I keep my share & (since they gave me permission to collect the money), donate their shares to a charity like the Red Cross who would have helped you all had you needed it.

Or *even* give their share back to them, minus a administrative surcharge. Of about 98%...
  • The cheek of them, they assumed wrong. You treated them and they should be grateful. You keep the money, think twice about treating them again x

I personally wouldn't split this but it might rub their noses up the wrong way - you could give them some sort of amount; or take them for a weekend away. Which would cost a heck of a lot less.

Think of it like this. You bought your friend a £5 hairdryer and it burned their house down, the manufacturer agreed to pay £10K compensation. Should you or your friend get the compensation?
  • if u paid it all, then money is yours

if they paid their own way then the money should be split proportionately
  • I'll second that!!!! 👍

Compensation is only paid to the paying passengers. Free children are not enititled to any compo even if they are part of the family delayed so I say you paid, you deserve the compensation. Your guests were on a freebie in my eyes and you had a expensive ticket.
  • What kind of friends do you have that allow you to pay for a whole trip in the first place? Then to ask for anything further? Wow!
