Hi All, it was me who had the dilemma. I'll try and answer the questions. I paid for the whole holiday, I didn't want to be paid back.

I did one claim for everyone, with their permission.

We all realised when we got the 5 hour delay that we would get compensation. My friends automatically assumed that they would get the compensation and didn't offer it to me.

  • It is there compensation as they experienced the delay however I feel it is very immoral of them to want it from you when you paid for the flights. I feel they should give you there share for paying the flights.

    Get new friends.
  • If you paid for all of them, they should not expect financial compensation.
  • Certainly refund them AS SOON AS THEY REPAY YOU FOR THEIR TICKETS which you bought!

...How did you receive £1300 unless you claimed for all passengers with their permission?

Airlines shouldn't pay out all compensation to the lead passenger.

YOU paid for it (very generous of you!!) so you keep the full amount of money.

IF they have all paid you back their share, then you split it between all. If you and your boyfriend paid, you two split it etc.

Yes they were all inconvenienced, but you can't complain about inconvenience when it's free, they should just be grateful, and also feel happy for you that you got some money back.

If you really feel bad, take them out for dinner as a treat. But personally, I think they're absolutely wrong to assume they will get some money for nothing on top of the free holiday. CHEEK!

Indeed, get new friends. It doesn't matter what the legal situation is, if you paid for their holiday, you should get that money back. Who on this planet is self serving enough to expect to make a profit from a "friend" taking them on holiday. No friends worth having that's for sure!

    So with this extra info...

YOU paid for the flights and they did not pay you back for them.
THEREFORE the compensation should morally go to you.

IF the cost of the flights had been split 4-ways, with each passenger/"friend" paying their fair share, then morally it would be right to split the compensation.

But as they didn't pay for the flights in the first place, or pay you back for them, then they should not (morally) get any money back - and should certainly not expect it!

(I say morally because I don't know legally, but would guess the legal stance is roughly the same)
