I am all for proper private plates that genuinely "spell" a word or initials but I know I'm not the only one that thinks these 8 for a B and 5 for an S etc. are just sad.

My first thought is always that the driver is a wannabe who can't afford a proper plate (actually my first thought is noticing something doesn't look quite right and trying to work out what it's supposed to say!) It's quite probably a reflection of my own shallowness but that doesn't change the ridicule directed towards said wannabee... :p

Don't forget that all "private plates" fit one of the various normal registration issue schemes from the time they were first issued. It's only in very recent years that DVLA have started to hold back "distinctive" <spit> combos from general issue and auction them. They still fit the standard patterns.

So, to go back to "PEDO1", that could never have existed, since there was never four letter combinations, and there were never leading zeroes. P3 DOI would never have been issued, either, since I was reserved for Northern Irish issue, which never moved on to suffix or prefix combinations, and only used the three-letter-up-to-four-digit combo. (three-three was used in GB, but never three-four, either way round).

P4EDO, though, could have been issued, but was probably held back (from auction - single digits weren't routinely issued by the mid 90s) precisely because of the connotations.

its a pity they did not issue PEDO1 to a white haired cigar smoking PEDO
Nerdily... He had JS 247 - back when Radio 1 was on 247 metres. Not sure if he ever got JS 1 or JVS 1.

As a youngster - I used to look at the adverts in the hope of seeing my initials and I once saw NJB 1 for sale at £25000 - I've never owned a car worth that! There's a Jag S-type near me bearing N44 NJB which, if I won the lottery, I might to be tempted to make an offer for (to go on a Range Rover).

The cringiest I ever saw was B16 PEX on a BMW 3-series - presumably a bodybuilder. Got to agree with MobileSaver; the more you have to translate it - the more pointless/desperate it is. The best I've ever seen is 4 NON on a 70s/80s Aston - subtle.
I need to think of something new here...

    There are others as well

You can't get Birmingham plates with BL0x JOB, think they did it with BO08 JOB as well as BO11 OOX. They also blocked VA61 ANA. Anything religious related tends to go as well like MU55 LEM and JExx SUS or anything xxxx JEW

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

It doesn't appear on that list, but I remember it was reported that no SN07xxx numbers were going to be issued, in case anyone was offended by the word "snot".

That is too subtle for me.

    Can you please explain it.

    Thanks for that.

I did wonder if it was Anon but thought I was perhaps missing something more subtle.

It appears to now be on a Bentley Arnage.

Best I've seen used to live near me on a Merc sports - T4WTU, made more sense in your mirror, doesn't appear to be on any vehicle at the moment.
