Private plates - a lighthearted question

OK, so nothing to do with money-saving - quite the opposite in fact. But a fun question, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Driving down the M90 last night, I was behind a huge great Mercedes, registration FLY8E. Obviously meant to be FlyBe. Who does it belong to, I wonder ????? ( Yes, it appeared to be heading for Edinburgh airport ).

It's not the sort of plate that would appeal to your average Joe Public. A FlyBe pilot perhaps ? But it must have cost a lot of money, and it's no good if he goes to work for another airline. The owner/chairman/chief exec of FlyBe maybe ??

As I say, just a bit of a fun question ... but all comments welcome.

I hope it was setup to be legal and was

    FLY 8E

    Not the illegal

    FLY8E

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Actually, the spacing was ( in my, layman's eyes ) illegal. Which is why it stood out so much.

Dunno, maybe it was just a member of Joe Public. But like I say, it just seemed odd to me - a very expensive car, a ( presumably ) very expensive number plate - hey, I have to have something to occupy my mind on my weekly long-distance commute LOL.

It seems blindingly obvious that it'll be a corporate vehicle used by FlyBe senior management.

Perhaps a more interesting question is why they drove from the Exeter HQ to Edinburgh, since they operate four flight per day each way on that route...

Yeah, I know they're based at Exeter - I've done the Edinburgh to Exeter flight countless times, I live close to Edinburgh, my parents are in Exeter. Corporate vehicle - rather than boss-man himself - yes, interesting idea. Sorry, was just rather chuffed by the idea that I might have overtaken the boss of FlyBe LOL ! :rotfl:

Maybe they didn't. Perhaps the boss has the good taste to live in Edinburgh, and flies to the office in Exeter.
  • I once saw a CL65 AMG with the plate V12 0MY. Probably need to be a motoring enthusiast to understand that one.

I dont like private plates on the whole, but that one got the thumbs up.

The big house down our road seems to attract the private plate brigade.

The last occupant, who'd been a high end classic car dealer and racing enthusiast, had splashed out (big time) on GPR 1X.

The current occupant owns the company behind those mahoosive mesh banners / signs you see on scaffolding nowadays - Global Erecting Sign Services - his car (and most of the vehicles in his fleet) is on a GE55 plate.
