  • A fool and his money are easily parted. :)

I'll make a note not to sell it to you then, if I ever decide to sell.

But there again, you probably don't have the same surname as me so it won't concern you, will it?

That statement makes you sound even more foolish.

You paid £250 for a number plate that doesn't spell anything. You were offered £3000 for it and decided to keep it. :rotfl:

That's what I meant though thinking about it I suppose it could work with the older format if you tweaked it

    e.g. B85 BTH if you lived at 8TH or EC14 TBB for EC1A 7BB or W14 OAX for W1A 0AX
As said above - I could in theory tweak mine. But it would only mean anything to anybody who knows me and my address plus neighbours. And it would be illegal... putting a 12 plate on an 11 car! Can't think why anyone would do it unless the postcode was prestigious like the W1A example and the car likewise (and the owner was a snob?)

A few years back I commuted in heavy traffic and saw quite a few desperate cases with odd spacing, careful use of black or yellow screws and non-standard fonts. Which confirmed my opinion that if it isn't immediately obvious - don't bother.

What I also see occasionally is silver-on-black plates (only legal on pre-73 cars) on a later model. I can sort of understand people doing that for the look - on e.g. a black Beemer or hot hatch.
I need to think of something new here...

If and when I do sell it (or my kids do), it will go for more than £3k. Which makes your statement rather foolish.

I realise that there are some people who have an intense dislike for private number plates, and can't stand people who have them. There are others who are jealous that they never thought of getting the plates others did.

None of the comments from any of these people will have any effect on those who do buy these plates, make a lot of money for the Exchequer, and get enjoyment from them.

It may not sell, they're no guarantee you'll even get £250 for it.

Oh, it would sell. Believe me, it would sell.

If you say so, they're always dyslexic people with money to burn.

You really sound as though you would be happy for me to lose money on the deal.

I have my surname spelt out on my plate, with the E represented by a 5.

Seriously?!? As pointed out by others, a 5 supposedly representing an E is ridiculous. The vast majority of people seeing, for example, JON 5S would think the driver was called JON. A few might think it was meant to say JON'SS and I can't think of anyone who would think JONES.
I'll make a note not to sell it to you then, if I ever decide to sell.

For the avoidance of doubt, I was referring to your buyer as the fool. Obviously if you want to spend a couple of hundred quid on something that makes you smile then knock yourself out but several thousand pounds (for a plate that hardly anyone would realise what it was meant to say) is just silly and ridicule is rightly deserved.

The vast majority of people think good private plates are pretty cool (e.g. "VIP 1") but similarly the vast majority of people think wannabe "pretend that number is a letter" plates are just sad and pathetic and much hilarity then ensues. If you buy a plate to make people smile then I suppose it has served its purpose although almost certainly not for the reason you think. ;)
