I've never settled in my current house, been here about 9 years now.

On paper it should be great - good area, lovely road with pleasant neighbours, house appropriate size for me, manageable garden.

I've lived in a lot of different houses and two stand out as having had a warm welcoming feel to them.
I used to describe the sensation of walkng through the front door of one of those houses, it was almost as like being hugged by the house. I know how that must sound,:rotfl: but my OH and my mum both felt the same thing about it. Visitors always seemed to relax as soon as they arrived, just a good feeling house.

The one I live in now, doesn't feel bad, it just feels a bit blah! I'm moving out sometime in the next few months.

People used to seem to like my last house in that sort of way - like "visible relax" etc sort of reaction.

Me - I was all too well aware of all the deliberate effort I'd put into that, ie carefully chosen use of colours, carefully chosen front door style to start with and so on. It wasn't the house itself per se at all - it was everything I'd done to make it feel that way quite deliberately.

I'm now in process of "making comfortable" the current house I have - and the remarks are starting to filter in.....

But - to me - it's "a house"....and one I've where I've taken the precaution of writing the phone number down in the front of my diary for "in case of a breach of the peace" (ie by the neighbours).

Yep that's exactly it. I remember trying to decide between two houses. One literally round the corner/bend was miles better (traditional features, hallway, better layout - although more dated, better frontage, street and parking, etc) but I just had this feeling with the other one and bought with my heart. The 'better' one just didn't feel right, like I was facing the wrong way in the lounge and like I was in someone else's house (yeah, I was, but you know what I mean). The other one felt like 'mine' when I viewed it.

Like you, my friends and family also felt the one I bought was a lovely homely comfortable relaxed house. I felt it with the one I'm currently in too and everyone says the same, and I feel it with the one I want in Leigh-on-Sea, even though it's a bit on the small side compared to others.

I always try to buy with my heart. My Brentwood house I bought because of the layout and the floors and it ticked boxes. I loved the thought of it, but there was always a niggle that I ignored - something to do with the street and light I think.

Yup, a feeling. The cottage I rented had a lovely happy feeling when you walked in. Even just thinking about it makes me smile.

I used to feel the good, for want of a better word, vibes while you were home. I think it was to do with the light and air it just felt happy, like it was pleased to be where it was and contented with the universe. lol

My last, expensive, ramshackle, dank, damp rental was dark and airless and I hated it with a burning fiery passion. It seemed to hate us back and things just seemed to be broken or go wrong all the time. Its has a place in my heart though as it made us so mad that it kicked us in to gear to save to buy our own place.

Our current house the first house we have ever bought- its a newish build - nice, airy loads of space. Its got a neutral feeling. Nothing amazing like its friendly, but waiting to get to know us :D
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...
  • I'm not 100% happy where I am either and do want a move. TBF I do live in quite a deprived area, predominantly social housing, small time dealer a few doors down who seems to look down their nose at us. Very annoying as we actually both go out and do an honest day's work!
Scallys down the road, others who hand around the local shops.
We brought in 2006 and it was top end of budget. Then house prices bottomed so negative equity. We now have approx 20k equity. I keep looking at my mortgage statement though and see the amount going down. We know how much we could borrow and have looked at other houses but it's the fear of all the stress involved and tying ourselves back into a 25-30 year mortgage when we only have around 13 years left lol.
  • Funny that the subject of feng shui came up as a friend of mine is a FS consultant and she had a look at the house for me, and says it's full of "geopathic stress" (negative energy lines) which she's now cleared. The house does feel "brighter" (perhaps this is just wishful thinking?)

The other development is that our next door neighbour died, and our new (apparently quiet) neighbours, have turned out to be less ideal so maybe this will be the final shove to get us out?

20 years in a house I dislike is long enough. I no longer care why; sometimes you just have to go with your heart - we're moving!!
