There IS nothing happening. Nothing, nada, not a thing yet.
If one is that bothered about what MIGHT happen buy a place in the highlands. Though no doubt some crazy will tell you that's about to be concreted over...
You post as if the OP got up one morning and decided to look at the issue outlined, just out of the blue without any catalyst for the train of thought.
An approach has been made by the home, they have started the ball rolling and the OP is, quite rightly, in my opinion looking at how it might pan out given the facts she has been furnished with.0 -

The whole premise is hypothetical.
How is it hypothetical? I had the manager of the care home in my lounge yesterday telling me what he intends to do. He's told my neighbour they want to buy their house.
I honestly don't know why you've bothered to join in on this topic - you literally haven't contributed anything constructive and just seem to have a bee in your bonnet that I'm somehow making the whole thing up.0 -
It's one building, containing two properties.happyandcontented wrote: »A semi is two buildings attached....with a gap between the next. That gap won't exist so the house will effectively become an end terrace.
An end-of-terrace is a semi-detached property. It has an attached neighbour on one side, and is not attached to anything on the other.0 -

I will ask outright about why they didn't try to buy last year next time I see the home manager. He didn't strike me as a tremendously good liar when I met him, so will be interesting to see if I get a straight answer or whether he squirms a bit!
Don't be goaded into acting rash by strangers on the internet.
Unless the care home manager is also the owner, they won't know anyway, and there's absolutely no point getting into an antagonistic relationship when nothing is even set in stone yet and the most likely outcome is that things will stay as they are with the care home (and its manager) as your neighbours for years to come!
Keep calm, do things properly.0 -

The OP's house has another property connected to one side now - and will at the end.
The OP's house has nothing connected to the other side now - and won't at the end.
Like I said - there are three things needed here...
The neighbour to sell.
PP for change of use.
PP for the building work.
I can tell you like to deal in cold hard - if somewhat selective - facts, but buying a house is a subjective process. Currently we live in a nice semi detached attached to another nice semi detached. The proposal would see us attached to a dementia care home. To somehow contend that this wouldn't change a potential buyer's view of the value or desirability of our house is absurd. You're making out that nothing would change.
(And yes, I know that the value of the house has no bearing on planning, but it obviously has a major bearing on my life)0 -

It's called foresight.
PP hasn't even been applied for. Do you actually realise how onerous that process is?0 -
There are very few times when properties are directly comparable apart from whether next door has anything connected to the other side or not.happyandcontented wrote: »That is not the accepted definition or usage and not the definition which affects property pricing.
The fact remains that the OP's property is absolutely identical whether next door does or does not have anything linking it to the property beyond. Whether that be a passageway or a "link-detached" garage or a two-story annex.0 -

Thanks yeah, I intend to keep it cordial - there's no value in it getting ugly unless it really has to! I do think it's a valid question though that I can ask without sounding aggressive...

For what it's worth OP, I don't know why you are being given such a hard time on this thread. Those who think it's a non issue - why bother to repeatedly comment? Those who are just being obnoxious and refusing to see the OP's point of view - really?? If this was your home, you would be totally unconcerned? Yeah right.
It doesn't matter that there are various hurdles for the care home to overcome for this to be a reality. The fact is that approaches have been made, and I would imagine most people would be feeling very unsettled by the mere possibility that this could happen. And I don't mean that it's a care home, I mean that the OP's semi detached home could become tacked on the end of a large business. Frankly I don't believe anyone who says they wouldn't care about this.0
