When our Sky+ box broke, I managed to haggle the following:
New Sky+ HD box as long as I took up HD BUT they'd credit £120 to my account (i.e. a free year of HD service).

So I just remembered to cancel the HD service a year later.

If you've had your box a while and it breaks there is no way I'd be buying a new one. Just quit and they'll offer you a new one.
Don't think they have any more HD+ boxes (or at least that's what they say) so they'll use the opportunity to 'upgrade' you at your cost to Sky Q.

If it is the LNB and it's accessible then just £12.49 on Amazon will get you a new one:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sky-LNB-Output-Quad-Freesat/dp/B00KS4M786/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493222138&sr=8-1&keywords=quad+lnb

Edit: it could also be water getting into the cable from the LNB end which would require the entire cable replacing.

Be careful. A 12 year old dish may be a Mk2. The Amazon one above is for a Mk4, so wont fit a Mk2 dish.

If you want another Sky+ HD box have a look on Ebay. You should get one for about £20 locally (ie no postage to pay).

People also, sometimes. sell their modern dish if moving house or giving up Sky. Then using a local fitter will be cheaper than upgrading to, paying more for some facilities that you don't want.

I have just done a survey about Sky Q and found lots of 'benefits' that would be of no interest to us. eg the ability to watch Sky on a mobile phone or tablet, continue watching a programme upstairs after originally watching in the kitchen.

@50Twuncle - If you get a free service visit via haggling with Sky ,the fitter is responsible for diagnosing /repairing the fault -not you .
So ,if its water getting into the cable,a defective LNB, or a defective box he will put right.
I believe that the repairs are waranteed for 3 months ?

What if I get them out to change the LNB for free and it is something else - say, just the cabling or a connection
Will they then try to charge me ?
Or if the box needs replacing ?

AFAIK, and it's only from reading this forum, not personal experience, the Sky call out charge is £60. That's to fix your Sky TV. Doesn't matter what's wrong with it, what has to be replaced, whatever - £60. If they waive it, they waive it, and your repair is free. It's not your job to tell them what's wrong.

They've replaced with refurbs for ages (before Sky Q even existed) so I'm sure they're still floating around. We're told here that the box isn't the problem anyway. If it was, OP could replace it for, like, £20 on Gumtree.

I have heard back from Sky
Apparently, I have been a customer for 15 years - they have advised me to go through the normal checks (which I have already done, and told them this) they will get back to me within 24 hours

Sky have offered me a £30 call out - "because I have been a customrer for 15 years" - but I am still going to push for a free call out !
