  • I would look at both, and you could promote the one board on the other if you see what I mean?

Make it really clear that any one can start a diary, and how useful they are, I don't think it would ruin the board's atmosphere?

It was expressed in the previous argument about this subject (about 6 weeks ago) as "eyes". The diaries bring a lot of the "eyes" in, and the question threads benefit from that. If you move the diaries, you'll move a lot of the "eyes". Not all of them, but a significant number of them.

The sense of community (often derided as "cliquiness") does bring benefits that way, and the diaries are (IMHO) essential for that sense of community.

But I know that people will not be convinced until the diaries are moved to a sub-board, the regular contributers move there too (because that's where the "community" is strongest) and there's nothing left in the main board but newbies and lurkers.

Lurkers don't answer questions, and newbies don't know the answers.

    I hope that makes sense.

It does make sense ZTD however as we move along our DFW journeys others fill our shoes so to speak, in a positive way, hence the 'magic' of this site.

It's like the snowball effect, people can't wait to spread the word that the utter misery of being in debt doesn't have to be a lonely and scary place.

Collectively we all pass on knowledge, tips and support.

I like having the diaries on this board, personally and wonder whether I'd visiti this actual board as often if it weren't for them.

I have just gone through and attempted to answer posts with not many replies - if we all kept an eye out, like hundreds of us do, this would solve any problem that might arise?

Not being funny -sorry if it has come out like that - had 13 hrs at work and gone a little mad!!

I've never had a problem with the diaries, in fact, I think they serve multiple purposes. They provide newbies with somewhere to go and read a journey, one that often started right how they are feeling at the begining of it all, sadness, desperation, fear. But people can read the advice and see how others have turned things around, this gives them hope.

I also agree that the diaries bring the eyes to the board. In all honesty, I would probably just lurk around the sub board rather than the main board if it were to be seperated.

I also think the diaries spare the board getting cluttered. Can you imagine how many new threads there would be if people asked their questions on a new thread each time, rather than in a diary?

Newbies might be put off from venturing into a sub board to start their own diaries so I can see the board becoming more cluttered rather than emptier.

  • People and posts do get lost, but whether this is down to diaries or not is open to debate. Personally I've been on DFW for a year so I'm classing myself somewhere in the middle of the newbies and the old timers and I can see both sides of the debate. Diaries keep the community feel going on the board but the sheer length of the diary threads would make most newbies steer clear of them, making them less able to join in the community. (A possible solution could be for diarists to start new threads monthly with links to previous threads and a "Previously in .... diary" in a Lost/24 type stylee)

I think it would be sad if people stopped looking at the main board because a sub board was put together, but maybe thats just a natural progression anyway for people to move on.

It's a contentious issue but from reading the posts above I think that the potential loss of so many experienced people who offer advice and support is too great a risk. If they're not here to answer the questions, the newbies won't get any answers.

I can't even agree with myself. That must mean it's bedtime!

But in order to do that, there must be lines of communication between the "oldies" and the "newbies". Shunting the oldies and their diaries off onto another board is (to me) lengthing those lines of communication.

To be honest, all that would happen (again IMHO) is that people would start posting questions on the "diary board" - because that's where the most people would be.

It's not uncommon to see newbie posts in peoples' diarys asking questions, and that's now.

Then we would need a sub sub board :rotfl:
