Money Moral Dilemma: Should I spend someone else's Clubcard vouchers?

  • It's illegal to open someone else's post, and clubcard points are allocated to the owner's clubcard number so you can't spend them, and it's theft anyway.
  • It's unlikely you could spend them even if you wanted to as you need the matching clubcard to spend them. They swipe your clubcard before accepting the vouchers.

It isnt. Read up a few posts :)
  • No, if you open them and spend them then it is classed as theft, the vouchers are classed as cash and will have her name and clubcard number on them, contact Tesco using the telephone number on the letter and explain to them , they will then suspend the account until further notice and will no doubt send you a thank you gift for your troubles.
  • I wouldn't use someone else's vouchers, and as others have said I would expect to have to produce a clubcard matching the account to spend them, however it is also worth noting that the actual owner of the account can boost the vouchers etc online without the physical voucher being required. If you then tried to spend that already used voucher in Tesco it might be quite awkward.
Return to sender anything "official" and they should stop sending it. Anything else I would throw in the bin.

Sounds like the former occupier is particularly stupid, and you have been a role model in trying to forward/return mail.

You deserve recompense. Give it a go, though I'm guessing that these vouchers are matched against the identify of the Clubcard members, so even if you did try to use them, they might be invalidated.

If you are getting fed up with writing "Return To Sender" on mis-delivered post and are feeling a little mischievous, write "Deceased" on the envelope and drop it back in the postbox. This will usually stop unwanted mail much more quickly.
  • You are unable to use the vouchers without the card. As regarding opening post it supposed to be against the law. having said that I received a letter addressed to our house but some one else's name. I sent it 'return to sender'. Another one came so I opened it, it was a debt collecting letter. I phoned them up and told them how long we had lived here and no-one near to us had that name. The woman said she would sort it and we have'nt heard anything since. Am assuming it was some one using our address for all the wrong reasons.

Don't use the vouchers. They'll remain on the person's account and they can use them online.
To the person who said it's illegal to open someone else's mail: maybe so. Usually I return mail and mark it not known at this address but if it looks like a circular I recycle it. In my area you have to remove the window part of the envelope before recycling so it has to be opened. Furthermore I once opened what turned out to be a court summons to someone who had clearly given a false address on being arrested. So I was glad I'd opened it!
  • As other people have said, for all post which has a sender's address just cross out your own address (or I always used to cover with a sticky label) & write something like "Not known at this address, return to sender's address overleaf" & put them back in the post box. This WILL reduce the amount of junk you get, I believe the companies concerned even have to pay to get their own junk mail back.

To answer your question, no. Don't use somebody else's clubcard vouchers. As others have said I think you'll also need the corresponding card. If you try to use them & get caught out the least you'll face is embarrassment so it's not worth it.
