Money Moral Dilemma: Should I spend someone else's Clubcard vouchers?

  • To me, this is clear and easy. I wouldn't attempt to spend these Clubcard vouchers.

If I didn't know the forwarding address and they arrived on a regular basis, I'd take them to my local Tesco Customer Services and ask them to repatriate them.

You can't spend someone else's vouchers. ... unless you have that club card.

I asked Tesco about this just a few days ago.

Get in contact with them on Social Media. They'll stop the post.

I open a lot of the post I receive. Why? Because as another poster says, if it's going to be threatening debt collectors or something, I want to know. Plus, aren't some credit systems linked to the house?
A good amount simply gets returned. However, despite returning bank statements (unopened), I've still been receiving some. I contacted the bank via Twitter who said they'd sort it.

OP, (if they are watching) you *paid* to deal with this? All you had to do is put the letters back in the post with "Return To Sender/Addressee No Longer At This Address" scrawled over the envelope. I'd just bin them if they are still arriving years later, it's probably likely for things like the clubcard that the person is watching their account online and has no idea they are still getting sent out statements so have not cancelled for this reason.

If you send them back to Tesco, they'll deal with it. Otherwise just bin them, not so much for moral reasons (although this is important) but I'd assume if you did spend them (and got away with it without the named Clubcard required) and the person who they did belong to realised; Tesco could quite easily track down you having spend them (CCTV, if you did use a Clubcard then or any other time or if you tried a second time and it got flagged up) it would be fraud and deception and as Tesco view this as money, they could press charges if not make it very embarrassing for you at the very least.

Do and be done by; if this were you who had moved or someone you knew who may not be so together with their admin, could be very ill and too ill to have realised what is going on, you'd want someone to help you not take advantage of you.
  • You have to use your own clubcard when shopping to use the vouchers and they wouldn't match.
  • to me it is a 'yes'.

If they haven't bothered to inform Tesco of their address change, AND they haven't noticed the non-receipt of vouchers for SIX years then fair game imo.

FWIW, I've been in this position too, and the claims about needing that clubcard to spend the vouchers is false - I've never had an issue.

I had a similar problem with the old tenant's post - in the end I got so fed up of writing 'RTS' I went and bought a clunky bright red RETURN TO SENDER rubber stamp. It's now the most enjoyable part of sorting through my post, there's nothing quite like stamping a particularly annoying letter a dozen times all over both sides.
  • As many have already said, the vouchers are tied to that persons Clubcard so you can't spend them, I tried giving some of my vouchers away to a family member and then noticed the link.
  • There's no moral issue when it comes to Tesco vouchers. You need the actual Clubcard to be able to spend them in store so I'd save yourself the embarrassment of trying and not having the card too!
  • We moved into our house and the previous tenants moved out in May so 8 months ago. When we moved in there was loads of mail that was all returned to sender. After 4 months we had debt collection letters for credit cards and unpaid catalogues so we started opening the mail. After 6 months I then started contacting the companies including Tesco (bills for Tesco Credit Cards as well as the clubcard statement) and advised that the tenant no longer lived here and to remove the address, they said they would (calls a cost to me).
We continued to receive the vouchers for tesco, so we decided to spend them, and you can use them on the self service checkout without a clubcard - thank you previous tenant (not an old person or an ill person - just a lazy f***).

    I wouldn't spend them.

But just to clear matters up, you do NOT need a club card to spend club card vouchers, and if you do have a club card it does NOT need to match the vouchers.

MIL lives on Scotland, and we both save our club card points until Christmas. When OH and I go up for Christmas I use all of my club card vouchers and hers, and use my club card.
