I do not accept that you did not know it was risky to send cash in the post. However, I suggest you continue to do so as I think you enjoy having something to complain about. In my 37 years on this earth I have been shot at in Iraq, burgled in Birmingham and mugged in Wolverhampton. I have worked hard for ungrateful employers, broken my back in two places and been left barely able to walk, been knocked back time and time again whenever I have asked for help from anyone and yet still continued to try and help them as much as I can.
And yet, I have never felt so insulted in my life as I feel having come to this forum to post a warning for those who may not be aware of the Post Office rules, and may, like myself, feel that large companies should show a little integrity and honesty.
In answer to mpython : Maybe I did miss the Dispatches programme on Channel 4. I don't know when it was on. Perhaps it was when I was serving my country instead of sitting in front of the TV. Maybe I didn't search this forum before I posted a birthday card. But I didn't realise it was compulsory to consult people to use the Royal Mail.
And as for being a TROLL. Don't worry, I shall not be posting on this site again. So you and your anally retentive entourage can keep it all to yourself. For all your accusations that it is I who can not accept the opinion of others, I suggest that you take a good, long, hard look at yourself before you make such comments.0 -

I'm glad that you have had good experiences with the Post Office, but I'm sure that many people would have vouched for Harold Shipman, Peter Sutcliffe, Beverley Allitt etc.
 :rotfl:
I suspect if Adolf Hitler hadn't gone into Politics he would have been a postman....

Are you about to blame Royal Mail for that too?
Those post men can be relentless when they get cross! Thanks for the warning.

I think Cagey has a point: most of us are well aware that RM lose a lot of mail, and that cash or vouchers shouldn't be sent by standard post because it's not safe, but that doesn't make it OK. According to the Dispatches documentary mentioned, they admit to losing about 14 million items of mail per year, which is a small proportion of the total they handle, but still worrying.
It is difficult to claim compensation without proof of postage. This can be obtained free at a post office, though of course that's not always convenient: sometimes the sender wants to be able simply to put the mail in the nearest postbox.
Recorded offers no additional benefit other than proof of delivery (or not, as the case may be). It is useful for sending things like legal documents where it's important that it is known whether they were received, but is of no real use for things like birthday cards. It doesn't get there any faster: it's just normal mail but signed for at its destination.
Though I do think at least an apology and maybe a book of stamps would have been appropriate, look at it from RM's side: if they simply accept the word of a customer that cash and vouchers in card were posted, how would they protect themselves from fraudulent claims?
Special Delivery offers compensation of up to £500 as standard: if you need to sen anything more valuable than that, it costs more. The PO ask the value of the package for Special Delivery, so no, you couldn't just claim retrospectively that the mail was worth £2500. In theory you could fib about the amount enclosed when you post it, but since SD mail is handled separately and tracked within the postal system, there's far less risk of it going astray.0
