Warning - Post Office extortion

The fact is that I have never made a claim for compensation before. I have never been advised about the Royal Mail's conditions of carriage before, or even that they have any.
You are an adult (I assume). It is your own responsibility to check conditions of carriage.I'm glad that DMG24 is not one of those whingers who go overdrawn, get charged by the banks and then have the audacity to try and claim back the charges incurred by their own inept money management. And I'm glad that they are willing to accept such inept behaviour by a national company.
Not everybody on MSE goes overdrawn, or claims back overdraft charges when they do. I am one of those people.
When I use the services of any business, I accept their terms and conditions.
It is called taking responsibility for your own actions.
So because your postman says that his colleagues are all thieves, it must be a fact. Hmmn ...
CAGEY, you need to accept that you did not check your information before entering into the contract with RM. If you are unable to take responsibility for your own actions, and not blame everyone else, then you really do need to grow up.Gone ... or have I?0 -
To first answer your question about recorded delivery. No, there is no compensation for cash, vouchers or jewellry sent by recorded delivery. You could get compensation for books, DVD etc, as you can with first and second class.
With regard to the CD issue. What if half a dozen mechanics had worked on your car? Could the police make an arrest ? And could you prove that the CD had been in the car at the time?
I understand the difficulties that the Post Office would face tracing a specific person who may have stolen/lost a specific item of mail, however, is it not their duty to ensure that everyone who works for them is honest? I certainly can't do that.
And what about people who can't get out to the post office to get special delivery? I am disabled, and struggle to get to the post box over the road, let alone the post office a few miles away, and my wife is unable to drive. Should I be punished for this ?0 -
I accept responsibility for my own actions. Hurrah ! I am a grown-up, just like you.
It's funny how you are willing to berate me for my 'mistake', yet you are willing to allow the Post Office to dodge their responsibilites completely. Perhaps you would like to write to themto tell them to grow up ! After all, it was there responsibility to deliver the card in the first place.
I started this topic, not to assuage my error, but to warn people of the possible consequences of posting cash etc. I also feel that Special Delivery costs are ridiculous and that, if the Post Office expect people to use it, then they should lower their extortionate rates accordingly.
It's just the "few" who seem to want to criticise when a newbie, such as myself, wants to try and help, that are rapidly putting me off this forum.0 -

When you enter into the contract with the garage, it will state whether they will or will not accept liability for anything left in the car. Again, you (and they) have to abide by the terms of the contract.however, is it not their duty to ensure that everyone who works for them is honest?
How do you expect them to do this? And what about people who can't get out to the post office to get special delivery? I am disabled, and struggle to get to the post box over the road, let alone the post office a few miles away, and my wife is unable to drive. Should I be punished for this ?
!!!!!!. Now you are just being silly. Do you not have buses where you live, or friends? How do you get food?!!Gone ... or have I?0 -

No one is denying that RM failed to deliver the item. However, in terms of their liability to you for compensation, they have done nothing wrong.
I am not criticising you because you are a newbie, I would tell anybody the same thing.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Don't let them put you off Cagey.
To be honest, I really don't understand why so many people on this thread are such 'defenders' of Royal Mail!
What with these weekly strikes coming up, not to mention 'dodgy (untrustworthy) postal workers' and the extortionate prices for certain postal methods........it really is beyond me.

Yes, we do have buses go through the village where I live. Three a day to be precise. Unfortunately I was too ill to get on one of them at the time when this needed posting. And as for food, my wife does the shopping once a week, but at the time of this particular posting, I was so ill that we had to use freezer food rather than go into town. She was able to get to the local corner shop on a couple of occasions, but strangely, they do not have a copy of the Post Office's T&Cs.
Abiding by contract terms ? Have you ever seen the conditions of carriage for the Post Office ? Are they on the back of a book of stamps ? In fact, there is not even any mention of them on the back of a book of stamps. Shouldn't there be, bearing in mind that the Post Office wants us all to abide by them ?
As for checking criminal histories, the education departments, social services etc do it, so why shouldn't the Post Office ?
As regards the fact that, I hope it is accepted, the Post Office failed to deliver. Perhaps compensation is a little extreme for a first class article, but some form of an apology would be nice, not just a standard form letter telling me that it is basically my fault. A book of stamps would have been a token gesture, and wouldn't have hurt them too much would it ?
Instead I got a very snotty letter telling me that it wasn't their fault.0 -

Thanks Scorpio. To be honest, I'm looking forward to the strikes. At least I can't really "lose" any of my mail when there's no-one around to "lose" it.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I trust my postman, but the others ............
Well, actually we have three postmen who share our route. One has NEVER delivered ANYTHING to our house. One delivers something every other time, and the third one, whom I trust, is always laden down with letters for us. Coincidence?????? I think not.0 -

When the strikes are on, i'm just going to use my OH's workplace (he works for a Courier co.) to deliver my packages.
I do a lot on Ebay, so using them while the strikes are on will be pretty handy for me.
Royal mail workers are not all bad though. My local postman (the one on foot, NOT the van driver) is pretty decent. I roughly know what time he'll turn up, he's always polite and he keeps me updated on all the strikes etc.
So i've got no problem with him at all.0 -

Seeing as you are able to access the internet they do have a pretty comprehensive website...
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm
It even offers advice for sending cash and valuables in the post.
