The bit underlined is why we have so much wastage.
Use by dates are not gospel.
If it looks ok, smells ok and tastes ok.....then its ok! :p
OK to consume if you choose to do so, not OK to sell.

Tell that to the government then ... they've commissioned radio adverts making the very same point as I've stated.

I always always get the longest date I can.

    Who wants the older stuff?

I do. Over a year I save a heck of a lot of money by buying yellow stickers, food about to go out of date. I have it in my fridge up to two weeks past it's sell by date, check it every day, eat what is going to go off the soonest, first.

I buy out of date food from a Cash and Carry, tins and packets will be ok months sometimes years out of date.

I am never ill, and still alive :D

I think there's a lot of difference between knowingly buying short date items that are reduced and paying full price for something that is maybe just one day away from the 'use by' date.

If I buy anything that's reduced I either have a plan to use it pretty soon (and I'm another one who doesn't take any notice of 'use by' dates, I use smell & taste) or room in the freezer for it.
  • i bought a yogurt from tesco on the 10th - turns out it expired on the 6th :( i stupidly assumed it had the same expiry date as the other yogurt i bought which is the 19th. sadly not.

So - as I said earlier:

And in bold from your above post, I'll add:
or staff can't be a**sed to do a proper job.

But in the worst example, staff at a Tesco Express outlet in Birmingham repeatedly failed to remove labels showing produce as on offer when it no longer was.

It was still on display a month after the reporter first pointed it out.

    Yes, mentioned in post #39.

Appalling staff but where was the superivisor too?
  • As long as you weren't stuck on the toilet with a serious case of the squits or sickness due to downing a few mouthfulls of said orange juice, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I doubt it will have harmed your bumpie tbh. Any concerns see your GP for advice.
As for Tesco? I think they probably could have worded their response better & perhaps offered a £5 voucher as a gesture of goodwill.
But what's done is done so now is the time to move on.

Lesson learnt on checking dates in the future, be more aware when shopping and never always rely on staff carrying out stock rotation! ;)

I popped into Tesco today for some milk.
    In cages.
I leaned in & there were plastic bottles dated 24/2 and 27/2.
    Which did I choose?
    Of course!
    How long did it take?
    .......
  • usually look at the date on item at the front of the display and then take one from the rear. If the taken is later, and it always is, it goes in the basket.
I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.
