  • There was a child at the local school that asked for my help. She had been given a project to find an old person and to get them to write about what it was like years ago.

I did the project and was amazed at all the things I remembered when put to it and her homework was a success.

I couldn't leave it alone and kept remembering more and more and I re-wrote it several times. I don't know how many pages it is up to now since I finally slammed it in a drawer and tip toed away.
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.
  • When I was a young kid, bread wasn't wrapped, so nowhere to put a date

Don't start me off. I used to be sent to the local grocer with a note and queued up at a counter to get served. The man behind the counter would do the Two Ronnies act and bring the result to the counter.

Sugar etc. was scooped from the big bag and put into a small blue paper bag and he folded the top very neatly. Self service was years away and is a whole new story.

Use By = Do not consume (do not sell) after the stated date - even if the produce looks and smells OK

Best Before = Produce can be consumed (and sold) after this date but the quality may not be optimum

Display Until = Nothing more than marketing BS, and has no meaning or relevance to consumers

My point was aimed at the statement in sherambler's post that only the manager 'has authority to change anything or remove any wrong tickets.'

That's a nonsense way of working.
What happens when he's on leave? Or sick? Does the store grind to a halt?

If a store is showing labels that are incorrect they should remove the product, not leave themselves open to adverse press - and even worse, irate customers.
Better that there's a gap in the shelf with a note stating 'item temporarily out of stock' than
    customers being incorrectly charged.

And it must be the responsibility of the store manager and his/her staff to remove shelf edge labels when the item has come off offer - that's nothing to do with head office pricing.

The fact is that if any retailer is putting products on special offer they should have the processes and procedures in place in store to manage that and ensure that staff change shelf labels at the appropriate time to avoid misleading (and potentially ripping off) customers and to ensure that share holders' profits are not put at risk by giving customers DTD money back (Tesco) or losing customers to other retailers.

When the manager is not there- he is not there every day- the staff shrug their shoulders and say they can't change it.

We had to ask the price of an unpriced item. The staff member scanned and told us the price but did not put the price on the display.

A lot of people do not check their receipts afterwards so will not notice that the price charged was not the price on the shelf. Tesco don't lose out because the till charges the new price.

From previous experience I always check that any special offer has been charged correctly. I do not trust them but they are the only supermarket in my rural area.

My husband was on first name terms with the person in charge when the manager was not there as he had reported wrong pricing so often.

So - as I said earlier:

Then there's either something wrong with Tesco staff training policies or the manager is having issues with delegating responsibility when he is absent.
And in bold from your above post, I'll add:
or staff can't be a**sed to do a proper job.
  • It was freshly squeezed orange juice.

Its been a few days and I am not ill, so I am no longer concerned about my health, but i am not happy with their response
Honestly, look forward to your baby coming and forget about the negatives.

OJ after the best before/use by date is fine. All you would have is maybe some sourness.

What are you hoping to achieve?

I don't think it's just Tescos. Morrisson's and Sainsbury's are just as bad at stock rotation. And M&S. They must lose a lot of money as savvy shoppers take the freshest stock, leaving the old stuff to be sold at a loss or given away. As a shareholder in several supermarkets, it annoys me!
I always always get the longest date I can.
I will even go under the counter to the boxes on the floor to get a longer date.
It annoys me that the shelves will have veg with best before dates 2 or 3 days from now but under the counter is stuff with 5-6 days from now.

    Who wants the older stuff?

    You'd be surprised.

In Tesco, I always move the top green boxes with veg/fruit in to get to the newer produce underneath but there's lots of people who just pick up the first bag/punnet they come to.

That's why I don't do an online shop, I want to choose my own.

The bit underlined is why we have so much wastage.
Use by dates are not gospel.
If it looks ok, smells ok and tastes ok.....then its ok! :p
