Update - Confirmation rec'd from Independant PC shop that they have been unable to spark life back into the Laptop.

They say it is indeed a 'dead laptop' and will not live again.

Rather takes away my returning to PC World for re-imbursement or return of some of the £140.

I now am faced with the worry over a new purchase with the ability to do as I need and with right screen size.

I will review suggestions already given again :)

  • Can you tell us the model of laptop that died?

    Acer Aspire MS2265

The laptop is 8 years plus. It's probably due for a rest but not just now when I need it :)

I have given thought to a package of needs and consider :

    LenovoThinkPad E560
    i5 2.3Ghz
    8GB Ram
    15"
    256GB SSD

Have read SSD is worthwhile with my useage re images/editing in mind, so looking for that. Processor i5 or above. 8GB Ram in case multiple apps at once.

However some machines state 20EV in description. Could you let me know what this relates to and if it's useful within my spec or specific to gamers etc....??

This laptop shows at £693 on ebuyer which is more reasonable than the Macs but I still wish a machine bought that I know wil perform and not 'ask me questions'

    Would value thoughts

    Thanks

You still haven't told us what has failed. Laptops don't just 'die'. Components fail. If the hard drive had failed, then PCW would be unlikely to have recovered your data from it. If it is a dead hard drive, then all it needs is a new hard drive and a reinstall of the OS-a simple job for your PC shop. However, at 8 years old you may as well replace it and set it against your tax bill., as other components will be on borrowed time.
I also have to point out that your approach to data backup is somewhat cavalier. You are running a business based on the data on that laptop and yet you appear to have no back up system whatsoever? You need to budget for an external hard drive as well with your new machine, and consider cloud back up as well.
BTW, £140 for data recovery is about twice what an independent would change you.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I haven't told what failed, cause in truth I don't yet know.

PC World said 'motherboard'. Telephone call to PC Independant yesterday said that they couldn't mend the Laptop and get it working again & when I said 'motherboard' ? they said yes.

I will ask more specifically when I collect the dead laptop.

With a view to being 'cavalier' - I take some blame. I have a hard drive (separate), where my RAW images are downloaded. Initially a hobby, over the last 5 years, edits were saved to my laptop and it became a habit. Plans to buy another hard drive for edits did not come to fruition.

4 years ago tumour removed/ 2.5 years ago dismissed from long term job / 13 months ago wife starts divorce. Last 6 months new growth found.

'Nuff said, not here to debate life, but I have been rather distracted from the backups that should have happened. Laptop dies without giving 48 hrs notice lol (enabling action), I panic as I loose myself in my imaging and we're where we are.

Unemployed since job loss, no funds around, I am trying to take my hobby and make it a business. I am not big business, am just a one job to earn a little then hopefully another to do same.

    Photography is my enjoyment. :)

I concede tho with hindsight, I could have protected myself more.

Sorry to hear about your problems, sounds like you've had a rough ride.

Does it have to be a laptop ?
I will donate you a Dell optiplex 7010 core i3 with 8Gb ram, 500HDD if a desktop will do,
then you can buy yourself a jazzy monitor with your money

    PM me if you're interested

No idea, out of context. What resolution is the screen - this will be important for a photographer, as well as your output options. I'd imagine most laptops you're looking at will have HDMI out, which sorts out the output, and you'll need to be looking for at least 1920x1080 as a screen resolution. The Macs you were looking at are higher resolution than this.
256GB SSD will be fast, but it mightn't be much storage for you for photos/videos. Do you use a backup drive for storage or is everything always on the computer - what's your current usage?

That is very kind, thank you and grateful for your kind comments.

However, I only highlighted a few other ' life distractions' to try to soften the fact that I should have got round to it.

I was not highlighting to appear hard done by. There are many who have it worse and I am grateful for every day - although I will add that there are many very shallow people in the world in my experience.

Thank you Andy. Perhaps I can keep that 'up my sleeve' in case I can't move forward.
