DavidP24 - much thanks for your well structured and informative post.

I will take on all your points and view the website you suggest to help me make a considered choice, moving forward.

Having read others comments last week, on Friday, I took my 'deceased laptop' to an independent PC shop. I relayed the happenings at PC World, & , much like many of you have said - the guy threw his hands up in despair and concurred that this is what PC World do.

I have left the laptop with him and he is to see why it won't work. Gratefully understanding of my situation, his 'autopsy' of the laptop will cost me nothing :). If he finds he can repair, then he will let me know the cost so I can review if it's worth it.

If it's not the motherboard and a 'dead parrot' then PC World will be hearing from me over the £140 paid which I would consider was gained 'fraudulently'.

I'll update when I know, in case anyone is interested.

In the meantime I will review all suggestions and websites to visit as I would like to have more knowledge moving forward. :)

What kind of laptop is it out of interest?

Wait ... you've already paid PCW £140? What did they do for that?

It's an Acer Laptop. It is quite old but I'm thinking age doesn't matter if diagnosis 'fraudulent'.

Ok. This is where I have to admit, that I was caught in a panic moment.

The £140 was charged as I wished Data Recovery. When I received the return from PC KnowHow back end last week, they did give me a hard drive supposedly with the recovery of images and files.

This cost me £140 and at the time, faced with a 'dead parrot' confirmed no hope diagnosis, I went for my images.

I accept the *idiot in the room* tag if awarded. I did panic as I was working on images for client at the time.

  • "Acer Laptop"

An Acer what? Even if they do manage to fix it, you could find it's not suitable for what you need. So when faced with the question of "do you want to pay X to fix it or Y for a new one" it may make the decision easier.

AndyPix - we all have strengths and weaknesses in the world. Mine is not the workings of modern technology nor the education in taking it apart NOR therefore knowing when I am being fleeced in a moment of panic.

I agree PC World do appear to not provide a customer service for the gain of their own pocket and those that were raised prior to computers, lay themselves open to abuse. Hopefully, with an Independant PC shop analysis, I can address this matter direct to PC World.

Perhaps also, the power of the members of forums like this should generate media that'll make PC World change.
