What else am I forgetting to clean?

Perhaps it's a strange title for a thread but here goes.

Yesterday I went to use my big wooden pepper grinder and realised that it wasn't so much covered with a nice patina, it was really grimy! Yuck!
I set to work and scrubbed it down, quite easily, and it was a completely different colour. My daughter (who loves pepper on everything) said she had never seen it that colour ever! She's 18. I don't remember ever cleaning it before.

The reason for the thread is to ask, what else am I missing? Since reclaiming my house after all of the building works I am semi enjoying keeping it clean. I regularly take the tops off the radiators and clean inside them, for example, and wipe down my kitchen cupboards every week as they are high gloss and show every mark.

I'm sure there must be other things like the pepper grinder which I have just not realised are really grubby. So come on guys, what have you realised with a shock one day that you just never think of cleaning until it's trying to walk off by itself?
I know I won't be the only one out there!

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

The areas that lots of people touch, like door handles, light switches, toilet flush, banister top. They all need a proper wipe, not a dust. I always do them before I even think of dusting anywhere

    Telephones and remote controls

Just got rid of the land line and went to box the phone for a car boot and noticed how filthy it was.

The bulb holder in lamps. I dust the shade and base but it was only when I had to change a bulb I noticed how dirty and dusty the holder was. Actually couldn't remember when (if) I had every cleaned it and I'd had it for years:o
  • I'm a cleaner and most people seem to have something they forget, including me! I've often found that people forget the tops of kitchen cabinets, if they do a lot of frying it can get quite greasy up there. I always seem to forget my lampshades - I have a brush attachment on my hoover which does the job but somehow when I'm looking at the floor I forget about the ceiling.

I can relate to that Margaret, people have areas of focus. Mine are floors. Come into my house and you could eat your dinner off the floor if you felt so inclined. Just don't try looking up. I don't do 'up'.

Does deliberately not going into teenagers rooms count?
Their privacy is important (although I'll flex that to recover Pratchetts in the plural) but I'm unwilling to set precedents by trying to find their floor.

I made it very clear that stockings required a Path For Santa & only got minor injuries. I suspect their ceilings are fine, they just don't do "down"!

The bottom bit of the chest of drawers - if you remove the actual bottom drawer, there's this wooden "shelf" for want of a better word that's thick with dust!

I had occasion to take the bottom drawer right out of Mr LW's CoD the other day, and I was horrified at what lay beneath:eek: So of course I had to have the bottom drawers out of all the chests and wardrobes and clean.

It's just in the normal course of things, you don't remove the drawers completely so you don't see it or think of it.

It's like the hinge on my dishwasher- you don't see it when it's fully open or closed but boy does it get manky:eek:

My mum puts a layer of newspaper on top of the kitchen cabinets, then when it comes to cleaning all the grease/dust from the kitchen has settled on the paper not the cabinet. The paper can be binned and cabinet tops just need a quick wipe. I've been meaning to do this myself for years but never got round to it - that could be my job for today!
  • That's such a good idea of your Mum's, KitKatMum2. I'm off to find some newspaper! Thank you :)
