Electric cars

dacouch said:Used electric cars have such terrible residuals I would be tempted, if I had anywhere to charge one. For the same reason I think buying a new one would be a very bad idea.
I charge mine at work, no congestion charge and free parking in Westminster (Which I use all of on a daily basis)
It works out well for me as I literally have no running costs
Some good info here. However, just like diesel cars, EG diesel was cheaper than eptrol until diesel cars took off thank to the help from the Gov. These freebies, sure enjoy them for now but I think you will agree they will go.
As you said in another post, "elec cars not for all" a good statement, IMHO
We have been reading up on electric cars and which have the best batteries, ie degeneration, etc.
We needed better batteries and once these cars really take off the price to charge them will go up big style and I'm not sure the national grid wil be able to manage regardless of what they say.

The govt. will need to find a way to replace all the tax that is lost from petrol/diesel sales, so they will have to implement a new system to compensate before the majority of cars are electric powered.Probably develop a system around miles traveled and apply the equivalent charge per mile..I..eg in the long term electric cars will not be significantly cheaper to run than petrol or diesel....IMHO.."It's everybody's fault but mine...."1

sweetsand said:Perhaps the gov could consider taxing cars, road taxing cars by their RRP?If only we had some sort of tax that was a percentage of the purchase price of the item, payable when it is sold, we could set it at 20% or so, and the money could go to The Treasury. In fact, we could even make it so retailers collect all the tax, box it up and send it to the treasury, then all the Government would have to do is check the figures every year (and spend the money....)I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I think we could also tax people on their income at the point where it gets paid. We could call it wages tax or something like that.2

I know what you mean about doors being smashed into, you going out when it is quiet and to places that have empty parking spaces is another good idea, If it works then great, what I do is go out when it's really busy and park in only full car parks BUT!! (and here's a great tip for you too) I park that close to other cars that the doors can't be opened, that way NOBODY can smash their doors into my car. I have to get out via the boot but I find it's worth it to avoid the 'ignorant' drivers you talk of causing damage.
