Electric cars

Certainly on the evening I collected my car there were about a dozen cars being picked up from that dealer and (at least) three were eGolfs. There may also have been PHEVs in the rest of the crowd (and possibly more eGolfs but I don’t think so), I didn’t look, but mine was one of three eGolfs at the front of the dealership.
The problem is that demand far outstrips supply at the moment. Waiting lists for the Kona and Niro are backed up, some say until early 2021. They just can't make the batteries fast enough.0 -
Charging points.
Just back from a short break in the Black Forest. Stayed at Schliffkopf Hotel Baiersbronn. It is in the middle of nowhere but since our last stay in 2016 has THREE charging points installed.
In Luxembourg there is a large flat parking in the centre of Town called Glacis Parking that has just this year had 30 charging points installed.
My daughter has recently moved into a new build apartment with underground parking. During the build one of the options listed for her parking spot was to have it pre-wired for a charger.

I suspect VW have some way to go to win back hearts and minds, but a great BEV package is a good way to start, and I suspect that's what this will be, though I admit it's just a guess.
VW ID. 3 available to pre-orderThe UK will get the ID 3 1st Plus trim initially, which features a 58 kWh battery, and a range of 261 miles on a single charge (WLTP). Charging can be carried out at speeds of 100-125 kW via CCS, and the first ID. 3’s will roll off the production line at the end of the year. Deliveries are expected from summer 2020.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Theyvarevtaking interest for the Honda E, with 125 mile range though it's a bit futuristic for some.
I'd seen a claim that there's enough interest already to claim the 6000 initial wave.

That's what they tell us. But, the capacity is there if they want it. Traditional makers are just trying to keep selling fossil burners for as long as they can to keep profits up in both sales and servicing.
I'm sure there are bottlenecks with battery production as it is ramped up, although there must be truth in your second statement as well!
What is interesting about the VW and Honda examples is that it shows that the market is segmenting a bit - maturing seemed the wrong word to use at the moment.;-) There is a place both for 125 and 260 mile ranges, and it will be interesting to see how the respective battery capacities are reflected in their price.0 -
When we say "bottlenecks with battery production", are we talking about cell availability, or assembly of the cells into battery packs?0

I'd read 'batteries' as relating to 'cells' as the assembly into packs would be down to whoever wants to assemble them into whatever configuration they desire, which in terms of process is reasonably straightforward .... as the issue is one of sourcing as opposed to building assembly manufacturing capacity I would have thought the issue was pretty obvious!

Yet the general market for LiIon cells continues to fall in price and soar in production numbers.
Correct, but you missed out the crucial part that supply is still behind demand as like supply, demand is also a variable, and is also 'soaring'.
Edit - Nice timing, here's an article today on the issue, showing that PEV sales in 2018 were 63% higher than 2017, and BEV's made up the majority of PEV sales (69%).
So, soaring numbers of PEV's, mostly BEV's (which have larger batteries), and I assume/suspect on average larger battery packs (year on year).
