Good for you. I've never towed anything in 20 years of driving, and don't intend to start. If you do require to tow on a regular basis than your stuck with the combustion engine.0 -
Both the iPace and Model X are rated for towing.
Range is clearly reduced, and charging will be difficult/impossible if you have a caravan hitched up.
I doubt we'll see EVs with good range and towing for the next 5 years, the battery pack size required is simply too expensive.
that's kinda what I was thinking myself thanks0 -
UK Model 3 prices aren't out yet, but by the of next month (April) am sure we'll know. Current best guess is £38k for long range RWD Model 3, so long range RWD Y will be a touch over £40k, and AWD version just above £45k.
Not cheap cars, but inline with what BMW/Audi wants for a decent spec X3 or Q3.
RHD versions of the Y wouldn't by here for another 18 months though, at the earliest.
Meanwhile I was forced to fit the 22inch wheels I had spare on our X after a puncture, so it's now officially the lowest range car Tesla current sell with the highest consumption - But the wheels do look fab.
Spent over 3hrs today covering 160 miles of UK rush hour motorway, another 160 miles tomorrow, and than 220 miles planned for Sunday, so over 550 miles this weekend once done, total cost for fuel will be about £10. These things are fantastic mile munches....But some people still think EVs aren't suitable for long trips :rotfl:
How come less than 2p per mile?
My PHEV does 3 miles per KWh and at approx 15p per KWh Avro Energy it is about 5p per mile. Electric mileage only.0 -

Why do people think EVs cannot tow?

Car manufacturers can make cars suitable for motorways, off-road and city driving, you name it, they can make it.0 -
50 miles is nothing though ... I don't fancy trying to charge an electric car whilst towing. I have filled up with diesel whilst towing, it's a faff but can be done, charging would be a different story I reckon0

I don't have an EV, but assume almost the first thing you do when you buy one is change to a dual rate tariff and charge on cheap night rate leccy.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.
For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.0 -
Tesla give you free charging at Superchargers over here? That would explain it.
Towing is going to be the last thing to be achievable with an EV. The current offerings suit me (but not my wallet), but I normally do localish runs or at least empty in one direction. Moving a caravan across the country on EV is probably always going to suck in terms of range (it'll be a much more pleasant experience due to the torque though). You probably can't even get away with adding batteries to the caravan to boost the range without going over the 3500kg weight limit for newer licenses.0 -

Agree ... the average EV user would be charging the vehicle overnight to take advantage of off-peak tariffs whilst sleeping, but additionally 3 miles/kWh is pretty low for most current EVs, even the MX from what I've been told by a local owner (~2.9 on silly cold runs with ~3.5 being more likely for an average run) ...

Had new E7 meter installed April 5th last year, so coming up to 12 months. All appliances like dishwasher/washing machine run overnight.
Have used 1728 kWh day time rate so far in just under 12 month, our day rate is 14.5p per kWh so £250.
Night time 6452kWh, at 7p per kWh, so £435.
In that time the car has done 13,500 miles, so even assuming all night use is for the car that 3p per mile.0 -

Good grief, you haven't got solar panels?!
Joking aside, if we're talking about the economics of EVs, solar panels make a difference and you start getting into complicated spreadsheets as to how and when to charge and what tariff to be on.
Currently I pay over 21p a unit but no standing charge, which works for me as I'm a very low user. When I get an EV all bets are off as to which tariff will suit me!0
