32A at 230v = 7.36kW.
A "7kW" charger for half an hour = 3.5kWh. Less, in practice, because they're all nominal and assuming 100% efficiency.
At 3 miles/kWh = 10.5 miles.
The key, though, is that Herzlos said "on a reasonably powerful charger", and then specified a "fast charger". That means a lot more than 32A/230v.0 -

(140 mile round trip to t'big city yesterday, btw. The car park we used - one of the city centre's largest - contains ~950 spaces, and has 5x 7kW chargers)0 -

As already mentioned, Lidl.
They have various rapid chargers from pod-point (free) with 43kWh Type 2, and 50kWh CCS and Chademo.
So 30mins would get you approximately 25kWh, which is around 77miles. Although as pointed out, even charging from low SOC, you're probably looking at around 20kWh...obviously depends on capacity of the battery, SOC, temperature, SOH of the battery etc.
EDIT: Around 30 43-50kWh chargers in the UK, and about 40 22kWh chargers. So ~70 chargers >7kWh in the UK.0 -

Today or tomorrow?
Also bear in mind the marketing side of this, just like cheap petrol or vouchers for even cheaper petrol if you use the store. Expect supermarkets to offer EV charging incentives once the market is big enough for this to be of interest to them.
For marketing purposes, I'd guess at free 7kW chargers and reasonably priced fast chargers (with occasional deals/incentives reducing costs further).Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

10.5 miles of free usage just for being parked at a supermarket for half an hour isn't bad though, eh?
That's half of an average cars daily usage.
You'd obviously get better results from higher powered chargers, which will rollout as demand dictates.0 -
This survey surprised me showing little demand (11%) for small (compact) EV's. I'd have thought demand would be high, so long as the price is low.
Perhaps the results are skewed as the respondents are owners of EV's, not folk wanting to own EV's. Not sure?

I was just trying to clarify for everyone, not just you, that EVs and PHEVS don't just park in these spaces - they're for charging only. No-one should be surprised to see EVs or PHEVs in normal spaces. I know you know this. I'm not sure buglawton does. Can't see the point of supermarket chargers. Although my local Tesco has two it's just really just a bit of fun. 0.71kWh does not really add much whilst picking up some items
I can. What's your car and what are the chargers? 22kW AC chargers are pretty cheap, and an hour of shopping would have just about filled my Zoe. If it's only 3kW, or you car can only charge at 3kW, yes, there's less point. You can't just say 'charger' - they come in all shapes and sizes!32A at 230v = 7.36kW.

Ah, there we go, numbers. 3mpkwh is a low estimate, BTW but not unreasonable. Yes, I'd plug into a 7kW charger whilst shopping, but I don't think I'd bother with a 3kw one.10.5 miles of free usage just for being parked at a supermarket for half an hour isn't bad though, eh?
Agreed.0 -
At last someone who gets the point. Possibly one day every space will have a charging hose connected to central circuitry. Till then it'll be all a bit of a farce but nice enough for those with a driveway and a backup ICE car.0

... assuming that you only charge in a supermarket, sure. If you charge elsewhere (like wherever the car lives during the day or during the night.
With cars now having a 200+ mile range on electric, you still only need to charge the thing every week or so.There are far more desrving/useful places for chargers.
Absolutely, but why not have both?0 -

Do you know what ranges most EV's have? And what distance the average car travels? Do you know how long it takes to charge?
Do you know how much time a car needs to spend on a charger in a normal usage cycle?
To help you out: 150 miles, 140 miles. ~7 hours slow, 2 hours fast. Assuming a slow charger, a car needs to spend about 4% of it's week on a charger.
Why does it need a dedicated charging bay anywhere it stops if it only needs to spend 4% of it's time being charged?0
