I did wonder if there really was an IT problem
Sounds like it. "this new backend will reduce your costs by X%"; so 1. they paid a shed-load for it 2. it didn't work  3. they didn't have a backup.

I contacted Tonik back in May 2018 when they had undercharged my mother following a switch of tariffs - I wanted to do the right thing. It was clear that they had issues with their systems back then.

I would imagine the margins on electric and gas are fairly tight, if you make a miscalculation you could lose a lot of money.

Scottish Power’s tariffs don’t look very good. I’m already waiting for the results of another collective so hopefully, this will get sorted out fairly quickly.

I'm pleased to report that my switch to Octopus Energy went through today. One worry out of the way. All I need now is up to date and correct billing for my Tonik account then I can put this horror of a year behind me. I thought selecting 'no exit fee' tariffs meant I could leave if ever I was unhappy with the service but the lack of regular billing kept me hostage. I wanted my account to be up to date when I switched.  As that hadn't happened since the billing system upgrade I eventually decided it wasn't going to happen so I left.

Scottish Power has been appointed as supplier of last resort: https://www.tonikenergy.com/
"Tonik Energy Ltd is ceasing to trade. Ofgem, the energy regulator, has appointed Scottish Power as the new supplier for its customers. Scottish Power will supply energy to all of Tonik Energy’s customers as of Saturday 10 October 2020........"

Remmember to take meter readings today. Photograph them if possible. Let's hope it all goes smoothly.

I'm thinking of asking Octopus to create a special Club tariff  for ex-Tonik escapees (like me) :(

Oh dear i was on Green Super Power (1 Year) v1 but doing a comparision im £130 worse off with a small supplier or £150 worse off with the big brands. I take it the scottish power traffif we move to will be pretty poor?
  • Yeah i can't find any tariffs better than what I was on which is a worry. I'll be moving from Scottish Power ASAP.

My MIL, who I've been trying to get to leave Tonik for most of the year, says "Will I still get my boiler serviced for free?"   Well, you have to smile.

  • Had a call from my daughter over the weekend who has (had...) Tonik as her energy supplier. Their website has gone and is replaced just by a one-page announcement which starts "Tonik Energy Ltd is ceasing to trade. Ofgem, the energy regulator, has appointed ScottishPower as the new supplier for its customers."
She had built up a large credit balance over the summer so I hope that the comment "
Former and current domestic customers’ credit balances are protected. ScottishPower may need to contact customers to determine the amount of any outstanding balance." is correct, however how do you prove how much credit you had if the website has gone and you don't have printed or downloaded copies of recent bills...?
She managed to find a .pdf of a bill from earlier in the year in the 'downloads' folder of her laptop so I'd advise any other tonik customers to have a look in their downloads folder and do the same in case you need to provide proof of a credit balance.

    More importantly, take meter reads.
