visit your isp's faq's to see how to login to the router, where you can find out the speed of the connection
Just tried isp faq (Plusnet) but couldn't even find any reference to router speed anywhere on their site.
I think I will have to live with this problem until I get another computer.
Thanks guys for trying to help. This is a brilliant forum for getting assistance.

the instructions you are looking for are how to login to the router, then all should become apparent.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0

Take a look at your signature and think again. It will be nothing like the one you have.
Your Packard Bell if that is what it is....is terribly outdated and incredibly slow.
I bought a DELL Optiplex 780 MT for £40. The difference will be like driving a Citroen 2CV up a mountain or driving a five year old rally car up a mountain.
Second hand, but relatively powerful and solidly built for business.
I expect to get many years of usage out of mine...for £40. You are doing yourself a disservice trying to keep that thing going. You need a more powerful machine than ten years ago simply to surf the web, let alone run programs. You should listen, old man.
Perhaps if you shared the specifications of your machine with everyone, they could stop wasting their time trying to find solutions for a machine that simply cannot hack it in today's world.
I'm surprised that no one has asked you about the spec....0 -

they can't even complete a speed test, it's not the spec, but it's ready to be replacedOldbiggles wrote: »Pentium(R) CPU 1.60GHz. 1.00GB of RAM.

I disagree. It is the spec.
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz CPU benchmark of 129
Consider that my nine year old Netbook is running an Intel Atom N270 @ 1.60GHz single core with a CPU benchmark of 270. I would have thrown the thing away had I not been able to customise it with an SSD etc.
So an Optiplex 780 with a Intel(R) Core2 CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz, attaining a CPU benchmark of 2166 will be a revelation for the OP.
The only issue is getting the man to listen.0 -
the spec of your pre and post ssd atom netbook would have been, and still is capable of running a speedtest, as is a pentium 4, running xp, firefox, and avast, with 1GB of ram, so whilst the spec is very old and far slower than a modern machine, it is not responsible for the symptom being described on the website specified.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0

You are quite wrong.
It is almost certainly responsible.'Not Responding'I'm also getting 'unresponsive script' messages
It's almost certainly to do with a lack of resources and nothing to do with the speed of his connection.0 -
does the speedtest not work on your atom?
have you tried the speedtest on a p4Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0
