How often is your rubbish collected?

What's this got to do with 'relationships' etc?

It's more to do with families - someone in the family has to put the rubbish out, some people are having to pay for their green waste to be collected :)

My food waste bin is weekly, my landfill bin is collected every two weeks, and my recycling bin every two weeks the alternative week.

My green garden waste bin is every two weeks.

Personally I think it's the right amount for us.

I suspect and hope the change in this article is because more people are using their recycling bins more and putting their landfill bins out less.

On the one hand I think that's great if you're using the products anyway, better to recycle than to put in landfil, but recycling more ultimately isn't the answer. Items are still being thrown away. It's better to not have produced them in the first place.

A quote I heard recently that I really love is "when something's thrown away where is away?".

If this is something you're interested in there are some great facebook groups. One is ZeroWaste Heroes set up by the founder of Zero Waste Week Rachelle Strauss. There's a big movement to try to stop plastic being used in manufacturing so that it doesn't have to be recycled. If you're interested have a look round for plasticfree groups.

We alternate with blue bin (recyclables) emptied one week, and black bin (normal rubbish) the next week. You can pay an extra £40 for a garden waste bin which is emptied fortnightly from April to October.

I think there are some exceptions though, as my mum lives in a pensioners complex where communal bins are emptied weekly - possibly due to the bins being stored indoors, plus several residents with occasional continence issues (there are special clinical waste collections for those with more serious problems).

A lot of this is about educating people to avoid products with excessive packaging. Also, the government could legislate to try and incentivise manufacturers to reduce packaging. For example fruit or veg really shouldn't need anything more than a thin bag - no need for cardboard or plastic trays as well. And if people were encouraged to cook from scratch rather than buy ready-meals this would also reduce packaging.

I read of a proposed scheme in Sweden (I think) which gave a tax break for appliance repairs - to incentivise people to repair their TV/washing machine/dishwasher etc rather than throw it away.
  • We have weekly collections for recyclables, garden and food waste. General waste is fortnightly (collected on the same day as the garden and food waste). Our council complicates it by having different days for recyclables and the other waste, so we have two bin days per week.

At the moment our wheelie bin is emptied weekly but from February it is changing to fortnightly.

I am interested to see how some of my neighbours who have overflowing bins now cope

Ours is also collected weekly but alternates between landfill and garden waste. Recycling and food is collected every week. Our landfill rarely amounts to more than one black bag in the bottom of the bin.

Cardboard is usually recycled up the chimney.

Something is collected every week but it alternates between general waste and recycling. The days are different so one week we have two separate collections for garden and household recycling and on the other week the general waste on a different day again. Christmas trees collected on garden waste day recently as well.

    Once every three days
Recycling and food waste weekly, proper bin once every 2 weeks but being changed to once every 3 weeks. You have to sign up and pay extra (£50/year) for a fortnightly garden waste collection or buy 10 sacks for £26.

(didn't read the poll properly and voted once every 3 days)

    Weekly

Small and very small brown bin - Food
Green box - Paper (all kinds including glossy mags, wrapping, and news), cardboard, clothes, and glass
Grey box - Metals, plastics (most kinds)

    Fortnightly

Black bin - General waste (Week 1, 3, 5, etc)
    Green Bin - Plant\garden Waste (Week 2, 4, 6, etc)

Having moved to a new area the council now recycles completely different things, and a lot more, than the previous council was able to.
