but ive tried both codes and phone says cannot undo restriction then phone restricted any ideas what else i can try

Cannot undo restriction means the phone is hardlocked, codes will not work, you will have to take it to a local unlocking shop to be unlocked with cables and hardware, this costs around £5

thanks,it seems ok now. This is a pre activated sim, so when I get to the USA and turn my phone on should it just connect and be ready to use?

No somebody may previously have tried to unlock the phone prior to yourself, with that model you get 5 attempts to unlock it with codes,if the incorrect code is put in to many times it disables it from being able to be unlocked for "free" and only cables can do it.
