I don't want to open a tin of beans and then have to use up the rest of them.

I'm lucky that beans are one of my standard/every day "go to" foods. I love them and they make a great quick meal of beans on toast, or will go with pies/pasties/quiche, or chips, or cheese/potato pie or on a jacket spud ... the sort of foods that I gravitate towards. I even had some, cold, as a salad item the other day.

I've 60s-80s taste buds :) "Experts" (aka: people paid to invent the next trend and make sure it happens) predict a 70s/retro Xmas (with 'twists') will be popular this year.

While I've sometimes thought twice whether to open a can or not, they're not something that give me trouble to use up 99.99% of the time.

ooh, I hope so. That would be so good. I would love to be able to get hold of some of the things that we had back then, if only for a short time :).

Unfortunately, we won't see old products resurrected - more that they'll re-use the words to be something completely different.

They will take elements of what we liked and work those words into a new title.... e.g. instead of a nice black forest gateaux we'd probably see "black forest inspired quinoa and chia seed crowd pleaser" :)

19.5C in the house when I woke up this morning. I can hear wind howling a bit. Just flipped the central heating on again then. Can't just be me - as, when I was out yesterday, I had several other incomers commenting on it being cold/feeling like winter again (I say that as local people here will describe it as being a nice day - just because it's calm and it's not raining LOL).

Really must get round to fitting keyhole covers on the outer doors - as I'm presuming that's why I sometimes hear wind howling noises that I never used to hear anywhere until I moved to this area (ie a combination of being in a windy area - and keyhole covers would do the trick)? I get that frequently now and still find it unnerving.

Do you know Pastures? - as you're in a windy area too.

Could well be worth having key hole covers fitted. We used to have more of a problem with the letterbox flapping in the NE gale force winds. Couldn't exactly stick it shut, but some of that thin foam tape stuff put around softened the noise (I think it may have been draught excluder tape stuff....comes in a roll).
You don't have a fireplace do you? That's a sure thing for howling wind.
Got hubby to block up the chimney here, but still have open fireplace. That helped a bit. Unfortunately nothing I can do about the cast iron railings/staircase outdoors upstairs. The wind whistles through that something wicked when it's stormy and sounds really eerie until you get used to it.

PN Your breakfast sounds lovely, could well do with that....might have it for lunch, without the brown sauce. Would go nice with those potato triangle thingies, completely forgotten the name of them....but I don't have any.
  • Think we need different tables at the virtual party come Christmas then Pastures:rotfl:

We'll have Black Forest gateau, prawn cocktail, etc on the left table for the 60's to 80's tastebuds and chia seeds/quinoa on the right table for the 10's tastebuds.

Now what do we have for the 90's tastebuds?

Says she having just watched a couple of little things on YouTube re using azolla (otherwise known as pond weed) for making own compost and being reminded it's deemed to be edible too - and wondering. But I'm guessing this may be one of those things (like insects for instance) that "Someone Somewhere - ie governmental" is trying to persuade us all into to cope with all the extra "mouths" on the planet.....

Good morning everyone. I've had a tooth abscess culminating in the tooth being removed yesterday. All very painful and not nice but it'll hopefully improve now.
Oh no, I hope that you start to feel better soon and that it improves quickly. You have my sympathy, there is nothing worse than the pain of a tooth abscess.

Black forest gateau and prawn cocktail seem to be back in fashion now. They both appear fairly frequently on pub/restaurant menus, albeit in an update style. I did a lovely Delia Smith Black Forest roulade type thing at Christmas for a dinner party that I was invited to and it went down really well. Not just with those of us old enough to remember it first time around, but those in their teens as well.

    hash browns.

Yes, they're high on my list to get another bag - but I will get the next bag from L1dl. They're really useful and versatile. I don't just "grab the same thing I got last time" unless I've actively decided one brand/shop is better than another .... I have to try 2-3 shops' variations and then see if any are better/not.

I keep forgetting to grab a bag when I'm in there though ...

Black forest was always my favourite - although I VERY rarely buy cake.

When I was about 19 somebody I knew got engaged - they hired the local village hall for their engagement party (late 1970s). Somebody in her family was a baker and had made THE most gorgeous engagement cake, which was a Black Forest one .... I don't know how it started....but nobody got to eat that cake as there was a fight and the cake got flung!!!

I hated Black Forest Gateau, almost as much as I hated Jam Sponge (the one with 2 layers you eat cold)!

I liked a good old (moist) sponge (no jam) and custard though.
