Cooking for one

Somehow I managed to not eat last night with visitors/phone calls and general stuff lasting till 10 so missing my food slot
Not as bad as it sounds as I have enough padding at the moment to cope and in fact looking forward to dropping a few pounds for summer. Often times find that when the weather improves my appetite gets less so I am hoping this year will be no exception and caesar salads will replace chips and beans
Today I will make a sandwich to take with me in the car to avoid Macdonald stops then hopefully will be cooked for later today.
Kittie do you make your own sourdough or buy it? I am loving it at the moment and cant decide if its worth a make
Karcher thats my kind of baguette0 -
I had a piece of toast with chocolate spread for 'breakfast'.
I'll have a baked spud later - probably with cheese/beans.... I didn't feel the salady style stuff topping yesterday filled me up at all, it left me feeling hungry still. You can't beat half a tin of beans when it comes down to it!
Actually, I cooked the topping and as I was doing that I started picking at the spud ....and I actually regretted making a topping for it as the spud alone was so tasty.0 -
Morning everyone
I've always fancied making sourdough but have never quite got round to it......:o
Banana and a cuppa for breakfast this morning. On-line delivery arriving in a bit including a nice crusty loaf (I hope) so lunch will feature that. I think I'm going to look the remaining M&S Southern Fried Chicken out of the freezer to have tonight with coleslaw, corn cob and a wee baked spud:drool:
Karcher - I'll second Nelski that sounds like my kind of baguette:cool:
Kittie - nice sounding menu, I don't do so well on several small meals I end up overeating or in constant graze mode but good that it is working for you:)
PN- Yes a spud & beans is hard to beat. Has the toothache settled?
Nelski - have a safe journey. I hope you get something delicious cooked for you:)0 -

It'll need looking at ... but it's calmed down as I've been brushing it more/longer followed by a good rinsing with warm salty water.
I've had one of the plums .... 2 remaining.
I ate that while waiting for another piece of toast/chocolate spread to cook0 -

Powdered milk. It's been on my list to buy for the last 2-3 years, but when I look I can never find it .... and I think I read somewhere that only Tesco do it nowadays.
This is milk powder you add to water, to make milk to use - not coffee creamer that you add to coffee to act as milk to make it a white coffee.
I first bought it when I got a breadmaker (long gone, what a waste of effort/time/money that was - and it broke pretty quickly)..... and a basic loaf said to add a spoon of powdered milk - so I went into Tesco (my nearest store at that time) and they had it on the shelves, in a plastic bottle that was milk bottle shaped... nice and easy.
It's great for all those recipes that want "1-3 tablespoons of milk" when you're a household that doesn't buy milk (because you struggle to get through it all and don't want to freeze it as then you'd be having to freeze all sorts of sizes of it).
You can also make evaporated milk and condensed milk out of it
For quick quiches.
I used to get through a bottle in about 1-2 years.
Just looking at Tesco and they do two varieties .... but not in a "looks like a bottle" style, so more of a cupboard/space requirement - I liked the bottle shape.
The Tesco one is skimmed; I used to have the "full fat" blue top variety... which has disappeared.Tesco is a 12 mile round trip though for me to drive to see if my Tesco stocks it
Just looking further:
Asda does Marvel, skimmed milk, 12 miles round trip. 340 grams £1.88
Sainsburys, Marvel 340grams (£3.70)
Tesco have their own brand, £1.88, or Marvel £3.70
Morries own 300 grams £1.88
Waitrose £3.70
Aldi/Lidl don't do it.
I'd prefer half that quantity ....0 -

Me too caronc but I do suspect it would be more effort than its worth.
Your dinner sounds delicious ...must have a trip to M+S soon0 -
There's an M&S food where I live - I used to live a 30 mile round trip.
So not really been - popped in/round about 2x just to look at what's in there, always left with nothing though. It's pricey....
People passing at the right time might be able to say "Oh but the YS ...." the thing is you have to know the right time and be in there - almost every day - to actually get hold of a meaningful/useful YS that's super cheap. It's either a 2 mile round trip to walk "just in case they've something" or £1 for parking just to see, which negates the point of going as I could take that £1 and go to Lidl and get a pack of sausage rolls, or a loaf and two tins of beans, or 1Kg of oven chips and 2 tins of beans .... or any one of 100 other food options that are assured.0 -
nelski forget the sourdough as you need a starter. Just a long fermentation yeasted bread is fairly similar ie the sugars are used up. Make your dough as normal and do the second proving overnight in the fridge. You will be surprised at how much the dough still rises. Take out in the morning and leave to get to room temperature, then bake. You`ll make a lovely bread and so easy. They charge mega money for long fermentation loaves
I haven`t picked at anything, except a few grapes, not felt like it and anyway, went on a bike ride in the sun. Had to jump off twice because of fast moving vans on these very narrow lanes. Got a great new yellow helmet from lidl, no-one could miss me. The bike I am riding on, cos I need to do 100 miles for its first service, has tiny wheels and is very twitchy, so like learning to ride again. He said 100 miles, did an intake of breath and said `but you have three months` I`ll show him!!. Done 20 in 7 days so far, has been too wet on a few days. Once I get the 100 done then I will go back to my normal bike as this one is folding so I can get out and about with bike in boot. 16 inch wheels and bigger bike has 26" wheels and a nice step through. I am having to remember to lift my leg high enough to get over this one :rotfl:0 -
When I was growing up we'd often have a ginger plant growing in the kitchen - for ginger beer. Then mum'd do the bottling and stick them outside in the garage. One or two exploded over the years!0
