The Windows 10 auto-update is driving me mad

In Windows 7, it would tell me it had downloaded an update, ask if I wanted to restart or wait and then let me choose. I would finish what I was doing for the day/evening and turn off. The update would finish when I next turned on the computer.

But wretched W10 informs me it will shut me down (whose computer is this???) and will do so if I leave the computer unattended for even a few minutes. This can lose changes to important documents or foul up a four-hour satnav update. Don't Microsoft realise how damned annoying that is?:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

They should allow the user to say no to a restart for the current session.

I do use Task Scheduler's Update Orchestrator to disable Reboot, but it re-sets itself periodically and its done it twice tonight because it wants to re-start. I am so fed up with this.

Agree 100% re updates being important, but it can wait until the end of my session on my computer!

Just update your active hours and set your restart options in the 'Update & Security' settings.
I've never had a restart when I've been working on anything. Also, it informs me that an update has been downloaded and a restart schedule for outside my 'Active' hours, giving me an option to change them if required.

For various reasons some people may not have the "Active Hours" functionality. But even on older builds there is "Notify to Schedule a Restart".

In related news the next build (its a big one - shudder) the active hours are being increased from an odd 12 hours max to a slightly less odd 18 hours max.

Unfortunately, you can only set a 12 hour period for active hours. My working day can start at 7am and end at 9pm, occasionally later. 12 hours is not enough.

That option is sometimes greyed out.

I was mistaken. That is not enabled by default though and with the ability to pin apps to the taskbar not so useful any more.

AFAIK it is greyed out until you get a notification that the PC has downloaded and installed an update and notifies that it will restart outside active hours.....Not actually used it myself so can't guarantee it
Unfortunately not a help if you are not there, but should help in your long workday case.

It's only been a real problem once. I got a warning that the machine was due to update and restart was imminent. I tried to postpone but the option was greyed out. A bit awkward when I needed it to run a presentation.

It looks like the next update does address the problem though.
