what is everyones main gripe with it ?
the fact that (for most users, not on Pro) it takes away control of what the machine's doing with regard to updates, and for me personally it killed the usefulness of a couple of (admittedly older) laptops which initially worked ok but several updates later killed the sound and wifi
p.s. both worked fine on fully up-to-date W7 and Mint linux..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Interesting input thanks guys .. I have never used W10 home ..
I must admit, anything that took away full control of my machine by myself would be a massive no-no.
My experience is limited totally to Pro and i find it just like 7, but faster and more organised .. Kind of like you would expect the "new version of 7" to be if you get what i mean..
So for these issues, would you say it was worth forking out an extra 50 squid or so for the pro version ?
Would you then be happy bunnies ?0 -
I four machines with Win 10 on them: two with Home and two with Pro.
I can't say that I have noticed any difference between them. Unless I had a need for the extra business related features of Pro, I wouldn't be paying extra for it.0 -
..........
Having more people with up to date security patches is worth a bit of pain for a few people.
Anyone remember the last time there was a thread concerning an infected machine?
The quote above could have something to do with it.

Mixture here, only difference I've noticed is that one 32bit Home laptop informs me of Defender updates, every other pc has silent Defender updates.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Well if you don't need the extra features of Pro (ability to connect to a domain, group policy editor, etc) and factoring in that you will always be keeping your computer up to date with the updates, no.Interesting input thanks guys .. I have never used W10 home ..

Hi wongataa,
Realplayer? That has been obsolete for years. What format are the actual files in?
I got a bit confused. They were initially to be found on Realplayer, I now realise they were moved to VLC media player when I had my laptop repaired.
They're FLV files/videos by the way, and I've been able to successfully transfer them (along with other desired files) to my new laptop via a USB stick. I had hoped, or thought I could play them on the Windows media player installed on the system, but after a bit of reading, I realize it doesn't play FLV files, so I will be downloading the VLC media player instead, which I presume will play the "Realplayer" videos in list order without any problems.
Thank you.

Having defender built-in out-of-the-box has helped, without a doubt...
...the other thing that helps is that W10 is never stable enough to allow malware-writers to exploit anything before it's changed again (and not necessarily by design)

I use windows 10 and dont really like it.
Thinks I have done to make it bearable are:
Put on "classic shell" which makes the start menu look like W7
Turned off all the spyware and apps permissions wherever possible.
I use Avira AntiVirus and firewall instead of windows defender
Set all connections as metered via a registry setting (Google this to see how, takes 2 minutes) This avoids the system downloading updates until I go into settings and update manually.
I have downloaded and selected other programs for opening photos, playing music, viewing pdfs and watching videos etc.
I use Chrome, Firefox and Avant browsers would never use Edge
Turned off cortana.
Have set my quick launch toolbar back like windows 7 has.
Uninstalled every app possible (a few are not uninstallable)
Turned off the one drive cloud storage.
Turned off skype.
Never use an app.
Overall the PC boots in seconds and works fine for me. Hope any bit of this helps
The instructions on the box said 'Requires Windows 7 or better'. So I installed LINUX

Why are you not using Windows7?Gambler101 wrote: »I use windows 10 and dont really like it.

Just turn off the live tiles. Then it is pretty close to the Win7 one.Gambler101 wrote: »I use windows 10 and dont really like it.

There isn't any built in spyware. Tweaking permissions to suit is sensible in any OS.Gambler101 wrote: »Turned off all the spyware and apps permissions wherever possible.
Defender and built in firewall is perfectly fine but you are free to use others if you wish.Gambler101 wrote: »I use Avira AntiVirus and firewall instead of windows defender
You don't need a registry tweak to turn on the metered connections. The option is there in the settings. Auto updating is a good thing as otherwise most people wouldn't do it.Gambler101 wrote: »Set all connections as metered via a registry setting (Google this to see how, takes 2 minutes) This avoids the system downloading updates until I go into settings and update manually.
As you can do this in any version of Windows it really isn't Windows 10 specific.Gambler101 wrote: »I have downloaded and selected other programs for opening photos, playing music, viewing pdfs and watching videos etc.
Again web browser choice is personal and not changed by using Windows 10.Gambler101 wrote: »I use Chrome, Firefox and Avant browsers would never use Edge
Personal choice. I have too.Gambler101 wrote: »Turned off cortana.
Windows 7 doesn't have the quick launch toolbar.Gambler101 wrote: »Have set my quick launch toolbar back like windows 7 has.
Why bother? If you don't use the pre installed apps there is no harm in leaving them.Gambler101 wrote: »Uninstalled every app possible (a few are not uninstallable)
Me too as I don't use them.Gambler101 wrote: »Turned off the one drive cloud storage.

Yes you do. Every programme is an app. It is short for application. If you mean stuff from the app store specifically well that is personal preference. Some of them people may find useful.Gambler101 wrote: »Never use an app.
So does mine with far less fiddling. Windows 10 is the fastest booting Windows yet.Gambler101 wrote: »Overall the PC boots in seconds and works fine for me. Hope any bit of this helps
