If I remember rightly if you haven't made any payments within the last 6 years then the debt is statute barred anyway and by the sound of it that is certainly the case.  For certainty it might be worth posting on the Debt Board as there are some experts on there.

I agree with @Spendless that you need to make sure your property is secure inside and out and also talk to the children about the postbox contents must be handed to you and not to the ex; if there is anything for him you will make sure he gets it.

Your ex is the gift that keeps on giving. Why can’t he let you live your life without constantly doing things to unsettle you.

Also agree you need to check the house security inside and out. Do your local police do anything like this, I know ours used to do security checks? I hope you get the old debt issue sorted out quickly.

I also wondered if police security checks was something they still do. Might be worth enquiring.

Whats the date on the letter or postmark. Thought that might give a timeline to when it was written/posted to it being given to you, so you can get a rough idea of when it was lifted.

I'm also wondering if this debt went to ex first and somehow he's told them it's yours and been believed.
  • I think I would be like you HS, and want the stuff GONE. I don't really understand about the letter, the debt will be statute barred I am sure like Joey dennis says. How bloody weird.

So sorry you are having this kind of nightmare. Hope things improve soon and that it doesn't negatively impact the mortgage.

  • Thank you everyone for your wise words and suggestions, much appreciated.

I’ve researched post boxes and there are some that are made with narrow strips to prevent people being able to put their hand inside ( something I had been suspicious of before with the current box). The new box is in my Amaz*n basket, ready to purchase as soon as I get paid this week.

My lovely parents visited yesterday and I talked to them about the Moorcroft  letter and the fact that the letter was addressed here but came to me via DD3 from the ex.  I asked my dad to do a security walk with me. I’ve seen a camera on Amaz*n that is outdoor and solar powered so the batteries are recharged by day and can power through the night. Thought that was a useful way of monitoring the garden, gate and postbox. Sadly found that my lawnmower has been deliberately damaged. I bought an electric one last October as I don’t have the time it takes to push the unpowered mower. I mowed the lawn about 3 weeks ago and came to do it again, only to find that the top pin of the plug is completely missing and the two lower pins are bent over. I’ve tried to straighten them and I can’t budge them at all. There is no way that the mower has fallen or been knocked. I can only think that it is deliberate 😞. I have taken a photo of the damage and will report that to the police.

Dawneybabes - the thought of a PO Box is a good one...unfortunately we are about to lose our local post office and the nearest one is a 30 mile round trip.

Spendless - the date on the letter is the 8th April 2022, so the post has been lifted relatively recently.

joedenise- Thank you for the info about statute barred. I certainly haven’t made any payments relating to the business since I came out of it in 2013, so more than 6 years ago.
