  • Thank you SH,  Lucielle, SA and Cherryfudge.

Yes the worst of the storm has passed us by. We still have strong winds but nothing like this morning. DD3 had thankfully suggested putting extra items on the “feet” part of the trampoline which we did at 11 last night - am very glad we did or we would have lost it! The garden fence was moving in the wind....I think the plants in our garden and in my neighbours garden was keeping it up...it’s still there to my relief but will be something that I need to add to the list of house maintenance jobs that will require attention in the longer term.
My friend in a nearby hamlet had quite a bit of damage to her garden but everyone is simply thankful to have got through without any major problems.

We did have a comical moment in it all! We had a power cut for a while which seemed to be followed by a power surge. All we could hear was this awful noise emanating from a long forgotten box on the wall...the surge seemed to have kicked a very old burglar alarm into action. A few moments later we had what sounded like a police siren going off from  the middle of the house which was very loud. We have never used this burglar alarm and I thought it had been disarmed shortly after we had moved in. Certainly never heard it in previous return to  power after a power cut. I had no code for it so tried ringing the company number on a very ancient sticker stuck to the box. Thankfully someone answered but the system was so old the chap on the phone couldn’t help me🙄. DD3 came to the rescue and knocked the police siren one off the wall - not sure that was the best way but it certainly sorted the sound out. I went to the fuse box and switched one fuse off which thankfully was the one that the alarm is clearly powered through. Unfortunately it’s the same circuit as the washing machine ... I tried switching the fuse back up after a few hours and all is quiet so far...I think it’s a job for an electrician at some point.

I did end up having a lazy day...was just so tired from work. Pulled myself together in t(e afternoon and have tidied the kitchen. I’m trying to be ruthless with the paper that seems to accumulate. Have filled one bin bag and added quite  a bit to the paper recycling.

Hope  everyone else is ok and keeping safe.

  • Thank you Dawnybabes & Cherryfudge.

Everything is much,  much calmer this morning. On closer inspection outside, 2 sections of fence are badly damaged and need attention today. Need to buy a little fuse as well because the power cut and surge has knocked out the boiler. Didn’t realise until we felt cold last night! Small problems that can hopefully be  solved. Thankful that we are all OK.

Glad to hear you are all ok. We had a bad storm about two weeks ago and part of my fence came down - a job for springtime.
How weird the old alarm going off.
    Enjoy your weekend

    Glad you are all ok.

Alarms are so bad with power cuts. One of my clients were out of the country and their power was off (whole street for scheduled work) I went into the garage as was going to clean the gym above it and an alarm went off. Wasn't wired into the house alarm, no code for it. Rang them and they said they had never ever used this alarm and there was supposed to be no power to it! It was so so loud. They contacted the alarm company who apparently sent someone out later that day (I had to lock up and leave it blaring, they had to contact the neighbours to apologise!) Who sorted it, but said there shouldn't have been any power to it and was at a bit of a loss as to why it kicked in. They ended up stripping the whole thing out!

We lost a fence panel, but next door seems to have fixed it back up. Need to go and see if it is temporary or if it needs a more permanent fix
