If you want to maintain maximum speed - there is !!
When you switch off - equipment at the exchange sees this as "noise" on the line and reduces the speed to what IT considers a stable rate.
Do you honestly believe that the designers of the DLM routines never considered that people my turn off their routers? As it happens I do leave mine on as I have stuff running 24x7 that requires internet access but I don't for one second believe that the DLM cannot see the difference between a router being turned off and one where noise levels cause it to lose sync and have to retrain.

    ...sky boxes on at night...

I think the in-laws do switch theirs off but then they studiously unplug the router, PC, TV, kettle, toaster and goodness knows what else before going out

My Dad, though not an IT Consultant, leaves his router on all the time, as do we.

    Is it an age thing????

Yes I think it is. All my customers who do turn their routers off at night seem to be the far side of fifty. Not all do it but those that do tend to be older.

(I too am not an IT consultant I do however spend my working day troubleshooting broadband issues)

Incidently you don't need an OR engineer to reprofile a line , anyone with access to OR tools at your ISP can do it. At mine that means anyone in BB tech support.

of course - this is only relevant to Fibre - ADSL doesn't matter so much and as for dial-up - that benefits from a regular reboot !
That isn't correct at all, if anything ADSL lines tend to be the ones that are actively monitored and re-profiled.

And you certainly wouldn't pay to have it done either ;)

Because there is no reason to leave it on.

But the flip side of that is that there's no reason to turn it off.
