TSB are consistently letting down their Northern Irish customers

I signed up to a TSB account online this year for their interest rates but it turned out to be a huge mistake.

I attempted to update TSB with a change of address over the phone and they kept telling me the only way I could was by coming into branch I explained I couldn’t do this and they eventually relented and instead instructed me to get my I.D certified (this costs btw) and fill in a change of address form and posit it off to them. I really hoped that this was it sorted but nope…

A few weeks later I got back a letter saying I needed to go into branch because my signature did not match their records, but this made no sense as I’d never given them a signature and when I called the chat operative he explained it’s a generic letter because they don’t ask for your signature online.

So again I was told that I’ll need to come into branch with certified I.D (it looks like they just wasted my time and money with the first letter that had got me nowhere), and the chat operative keeps insisting I have to go to Great Britain to get my address changed at a branch and tells me it’s my fault for opening a bank account with a bank that only has branches in U.K (ignoring the fact that Northern Ireland is in the U.K).

I think what TSB are missing is that most bank accounts are run entirely online or over the phone nowadays and I haven’t had to go into branch for anything for years. So why are they so behind? Whenever I had to update my address with First Direct and Bank of Scotland accounts the first of which has no branches at all and Bank of Scotland which is only in Scotland it took five minutes.

So, I got to ask if TSB are going to make life so difficult for Northern Irish customers then why bother offer banking for us at all or why not improve your bank so that we don’t have to come into branch on your silly whims? You’ve just caused me and I imagine many others a huge amount of stress and inconvenience.

Oh, and when I explained that I wasn’t going to go into branch to update my address as it’d cost so much I asked instead to close my account so it wasn’t a fraud risk at my old address and I was told: “You need to come into branch to close your account…”

  • Just open an account with a bank local to you - transfer the balance using faster payments.
You may have problems using the switching system if your address don't match.

(By the way it took me less than a minute to Google TSB how to change address - came up with a pdf form to print and an address to send it to)

If you are receiving the interest then presumably all your correspondence is on line so there is little chance of TSB communicating with you by post?

seems to indicate that address can be changed through telephone banking?

    Perhaps they've grown extra cautious?

OP appears to have done this...

  • It appears if you need even the simplest task done you need to go into branch :(
  • I'm in England, and I had to go into a branch, when we opened some accounts, so I don't think their targeting NI especially.

Assuming you've either not moved yet or you have redirection on your mail set up, you can ring them to register for telephone banking.

They will post you a security number and you should be able to change your address over the phone using this.

Another Northern Irish person who doesn't know the difference between Great Britain and the UK...

Don't they teach geography in Ulster?

If you're referring to me then why don't you show me where I am mistaken; however regardless at the very best you're being a pedantic jerk or worse a stupid one.

Another British person who doesn't know the difference between Northern Ireland and Ulster! ;)

Northern Ireland is made up of six ancient Irish counties: Antrim, Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Down and (London)Derry.

Ulster is one of the four ancient Provinces of Ireland, the others being Munster, Leinster and Connaught/Connacht.

The Province of Ulster consists of the six counties that are now in Northern Ireland plus the counties of Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal which are in the Republic of Ireland.

So Ulster and Northern Ireland are not the same thing, and Northern Ireland is not a Province - despite British politicians endlessly referring to it as one.
