Not really sure how any of this answers my question.

If you want to trust CEX of all people with your bank details, that's up to you. I'm certainly not giving them my account number and sort code. I'd be hard pressed to give that to anyone

Let's say you did give it to them. What exactly do you think a dodgy employee could do with your sort code and account number????

But anyway why would you have to give them details of account which had money in it?. If I ever need to give out bank details to receive payments I always give the details of an empty savings account I have so i can keep any incoming payments separate.

That must be a new policy then, they always used cash from the till before.

It could depend on the value whether they do it via the bank. It maybe high amounts only through the bank.
  • they used to pay in cash from the till.
I'm not aware of any changes to their policies, but if they are going to continue paying a pittance AND insist on paying into a nominated bank account I certainly won't be selling to them anymore. Their website only lists the terms and conditions of online transactions, so I can't check for their physical shops .

I wonder if they've found themselves the recipient of stolen goods once too many times?

The attraction of quick cash for unwanted items will certainly be somewhat tarnished by having to wait for the money to reach an account.

It is adding traceability to the transaction. When they gave cash, the seller could misrepresent the goods and disappear. By insisting the seller gets paid into an existing account, the link is made. The customer can always refuse, and sell his goods elsewhere.
  • I know it's not what you're asking but I personally trade in with Game because they will beat CEX's prices and I figured they'd beat them by a penny but they actually beat them by a pound! Which is worth having especially when you're only getting 50p for the game in the first place!

I don't have multiple banjk accounts and certainly won't, even if I could, set up one just to sell to CEX.

If you think bank details are so secure then I invite you to send me yours.

Very possibly, they are extremely lax when checking condition so I don't imagine they are any less so when checking legality.

Game are a terrible company who require all sorts of ID to deal in cash, even assuming you could get a good deal from them. I don't have photo ID and I don't wish to sell to them. Cex are at least more generous.

I don't see the issue with sharing sort code and account number with a company you are doing business with. You can't take money out of an account using those details (only pay in), paying someone with a debit card can actually give more information that they could potentially take money with.

My sort code is 40-47-59 and my bank account number starts 082 (can't remember the rest without looking it up)

So you only have one current account and no other accounts at all????. Your missing out on alot of interest on your savings and other benefits for a start!.

But to setup a bog standard savings account with a sort code and account number online takes only a few minutes and then you can use it for when anyone else wants to send you money.

I will quite happily send you my account number and sort code most of my friends have it to send me money. But of course i could just make up any number so you will have to send a specific amount of money to the account which i will then say how much i have received from you to prove the details are genuine :) . PM when you want the details!
