strangeotron - since you don't want to deal with Game or CEX, where do you plan to trade your stuff in - and as above - what was the value of the stuff you wanted to trade in?

Shop. Who in their right mind would send stuff to these people in the hope of a payment?

    Why would you not?

I've done it half a dozen times and no issues. All tracked and prompt payment.

I know it's not what you're asking but I personally trade in with Game because they will beat CEX's prices and I figured they'd beat them by a penny but they actually beat them by a pound! Which is worth having especially when you're only getting 50p for the game in the first place!

Its worth noting they only beat them if you ask

That is to say, they dont track and beat CEX's prices by default

I'd an XBox One to sell and CEX were offering £101 for it. Went to GAME and the guy said it was worth £76 which was the value coming up on their system.

I said CEX are offering £101 and you have a price promise to beat them so he immediately changed it to £106.

I was asked to give them my bank details, which obviously ain't happening and is possibly illegal.
Please state your reasons for thinking it is possibly illegal...

First to say but I call troll...

My friend works at CEX. If the store is low on cash they will offer bank transfer or you can try again later in the day for cash.

I don't see the issue with sharing sort code and account number with a company you are doing business with. You can't take money out of an account using those details (only pay in), paying someone with a debit card can actually give more information that they could potentially take money with.

My sort code is 40-47-59 and my bank account number starts 082 (can't remember the rest without looking it up)

    GOTCHA!

I remember a few years ago Jeremy Clarkson posted his Bank account number and sort code in his column in the Sun newspaper. Some one set up a direct debit to Diabetes uk for £500. Under the direct debit guarantee it is easy to cancel this. The staff member in the shop can't take any money from your account with your AC/SC only set up a DD.
    Come on you Irons
  • CEX are anal about ID - it's in case you sell them something that is later found to be faulty AFAIK. I don't have a problem with it - but I do have a problem with the awful prices they pay for stuff (in general). Not sure why you wouldn't eBay your stuff unless you're really desperate.

It used to be fairly hard to be paid via DD - GoCardless and the like now mean that the main requirement to be paid by DD is a pulse.
