  • You probably don't match the 'profile' of customers that they want to 'accept'.

It doesn't matter how attractive you look - if you don't fit their commercial profile, you won't get a card. I spent a long time working for a credit provider and we didnt give credit to:

    Anyone under 25
    Men aged 25 - 30
    Students
    etc

They just weren't profitable for us so we always declined if they fit this profile.

Try the eligibility calculator......remember it's only a guide though and nothing is guaranteed.

Although your pride has been hurt, take the emotion out of the application. Sainsburys put no emotion into the process of it so it's wasted emotion/energy.

You simply don't meet their lending criteria. This criteria is never made public information for obvious reasons.

Move on and apply elsewhere. Don't let it bother you.

Could the fact that I had a row with Sainsburys over Nectar points and copied the CEO into an email have influenced their decision,

There is absolutely no chance of that.

Wrong. It's highly likely. Obviously depending on the content of the letter, but I'd put money on it being the reason.

Copying in the CEO on an email (it won't even have got to the CEO) will not have any adverse effect on your application, ignore GingerBob's post, he wages a never ending vendetta against all banks. The decision will not be a personal one, the letter will give no info as to the true reason why you were declined, they don't have to tell you why, don't worry about it and move on. You just don't meet their criteria.
  • Come off it! Row with the lender, including direct email to the CEO, and then, surprise surprise, turned down for a credit card that would normally be a sure fire acceptance. it's almost certainly the reason, and this opinion is nothing to do with my views on banks or anything else; it's so obvious.

    am retired

The online response at the time of applying was my application "did not meet their lending requirements"

Possibly the 2 statements are related.
am a home owner, am retired with a reasonable monthly income of my own plus very good savings, have a spouse

None of the bolded items matter.

Your income does. Reasonable is a relative term.

Come on then. Tell us why the application would normally be a sure fire acceptance.

If you think about it, the low rate cards are not really for people with excellent credit who can obtain 0% cards. They are for people who pay interest ie who cannot get a 0% card.
When I tried a Barclaycard eligibility checker on their own site I was getting 9.5/10 for all the 0% platinum cards and the freedom rewards card but only 7/10 for the Barclaycard initial.
Try applying for a card intended for those who always repay in full each month and perhaps you will have better success.
