Another Skype competitor - they are offering some nice features. Currently in Beta, so it remains to be seen how competitive they will be on their calls to landlines and mobiles.0 -
Personally I'd use the ones supporting the open protocol - SIP. But that's just me.0

I downloaded the voipbuster software and made several UK phonecalls free.
Next day I tried again and had loads of problems. I reloaded and it worked once. Calls disconnected after 5 seconds, not able to dial at all, sound ok on the calls which I got connected to though.
I have sent emails to them but no response.
The mention on the previous page says 'lively forum' but that seems to be missing now.
Anyone else got this software working all the time???
If so, any tips???0 -
Remember these are Betas (both VoIPBuster and Jajah). So interrupts in service are to be expected. Might not be for everybody to play at the 'bleeding edge'
My VoIPBuster experience is mainly positive - though recently I had a couple of problems (could not answer phone when it rang, voice quality on some [not all] calls to Germany [same number] was at times totally unacceptable, and it seems VoIPBuster can't cope with hibernating laptops). However, in the main, I found it quite good - especially for a Beta.
You are right, the VoIPBuster Forum has now vanished - might mean the whole project is vanishing, or it might just be one of the side effects of the Beta...
My experience with Jajah and Wavigo is so far limited - mainly because it appears they both lost all record of my registration and I cannot use the apps.... Haven't yet re-registered, will do asap. When things still worked for me, I was rather impressed with the functionality of Wavigo (more than Skype), and the voice quality was better than VoIPBuster, and certainly as good as Skype.
For what it's worth - the most reliable call quality I get is still with Skype. However, I have some other problems with Skype - such as not being able to hear certain of my pals. I *can* hear them with VoIPBuster, and we have yet to figure out why we can't "skype".0 -
i am totally clueless on most of what you guys are talking about.. (im not really tech savvy!)
i have a bt line which i have deactivated but i can use a call card and phone people with a call card using the line thats cut-off. however, i still pay the rental i think ( i should talk to my significant other!)
so how does this voip work? computer to computer is free but computer to land phone or land phone to computer isnt free? and how do i phone someone when the computer is completely cut out of the system like some of you guys are talking about? how do i phone people on a computer then, and do i get charged or is it free?
totally confused..0 -
Voipbuster is excellent.
Just remember that it only works fully if you deposit 5 Euro. This is in case you call a mobile or a country that is not free. Otherwise your maximum cvall to any UK landline is restricted to 1 minute."A poor life this, if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare"

Nail on the head k_sta!
I've posted a similar query on the internet connection forum. A new wireless service is being advertised in London which, being wireless, doesn't require a landline or the £10.50 pm which goes with it. Which, I'm guessing, means you can use Skype or whatever and only pay for the wirless connection (£10 per month) and any calls to non VOIP users.k_sta wrote:Guys,
One thing never discussed about the competitiveness of internet telephony is the limitation that really effects it - BT
As BT has monopolistic ocntrol of the last mile (your ADSL line) and will not supply broadband without a telelphone connection your internet telephony includes a minimum 10.50 to BT whether you use it or not.
The real price of ADSL should consider all manditory charges to supply it including an active and charged line for telephone (that is unnecesary for ADSL)
The week after I had ADSL my phone line failed -ADSL worked fine but the line was dead.
It seems (after threats of a £50+ charge if it was my fault) that someone had knocked the fuse out of the telephone line equipment in the exchange. So the line works fine without it. So why can;t I disconnect it? Because BT wants 10.50 for my ADSL!
When will Oftel actually do something about BT beside lay down to be walked over??

I've been using VoIP Buster for over six months, even have an incoming number from them, not had any problems, have also tried their sister service VoIP Cheap, again no problems.
Wouldn't bother with Vonage, the point of VoIP in my mind is to save money, not to spend £10 a month when you probably wouldn't spend that much if you paid for individual calls, which you don't with VoIP Buster/Cheap.
I have also been using Sipgate longer than that, better alternative to Skype and you can use ATAs or SIP phones. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
