You use the card to spend, and keep the cash in your current account.
When the statement comes, pay from your current account, to the card, by the due date. The payment can be via DD, FPS, cheque, cash, whatever floats your boat. DD is the safest if you're not overspending.0 -

Thanks mate. Is it possible for the DD to be automated so it just pulls through whatever the outstanding amount is from my current account each month? That's basically what OI'm looking for it to do!0 -
Yes. It's called a full payment DD when you set it up.0

Great, thank you. Are there particular Barclaycard's you would recommend? I can see they have one that gives points for purchases and then an initial one for newbies. Not sure which one to go for but if the rewards one offers additional stuff a no extra cost then that seems to make sense?0 -
If you have no credit history, Initial is probably the place to start.
However, if they offer a down sell strategy, you could apply for something better in the hope you would get offered Initial rather than an outright rejection.
They have a decent chat function on their site - have a talk with them.0 -
You set a DD up and that's it you leave it, only need to change it when you have changed the DD eg currently it's setup for full amount but you change it so it's set to the main payment.0

Since you have a Barclays account, go to branch and apply, as their system might have a preapproved credit card. You will get to know the decision straight away, whereas you apply online through Barclaycard, they don't give you an instant decision. My first credit card was a Platinum instead of Initial (that could happen to you).0

Were there disadvantages associated with you having a platinum card?0 -
