Complete Newbie. Where to begin?

Hi guys

I'm looking for some assistance if you would be so kind. I'm completely new to credit cards and have been drawn to them for the purported security benefits vs. Debit cards. All I really want is a credit card to buy stuff with. I'm not at all bothered about low interest rates as I never intend to borrow more then I can pay back.

Will it be linked directly to my current account so it can draw the cash out of their each month? I've had a look at the credit card page and there doesn't seem to be a getting started guide available like there is for the savings one.

I'm with Barclay's so will wish to probably get a Barclaycard. Are they any good?:A

  • I think Barclaycard are great. If you intend to pay it off each month then you can set up a direct debit from your current account to pay the full balance each month, then everything will be automatic.
  • Thanks for your response. Do I just go with any of the Barclaycard's they have on offer as there are a few and all I really want it for is for the security of a credit card. Will it automatically link to my direct debit if I sign up for it online?
  • It won't automatically link to anything. You should set up a DD from a current account to make the monthly payments.

Don't think of it as a way to money out of your current account. And never withdraw cash on the card.

Keep the limit sensible say £700 or a limit your comfortable with.
  • Does a credit limit apply to a single purchase or a monthly allowance that the card is allowed to go up to?
  • Neither. It's an ongoing cap that your balance needs to stay under.
  • I take it I'll be able to set up the DD to my current account from the Barclaycard application page? Also, why shouldn't I think of it as a way to get money out of my current account? That's basically what I want it for, as a kind of proxy and safer way to shop with online.

So if I have a DD setup monthly that the credit card draws the entire credit balance from each month fully then it's like a monthly allowance?
  • Kind of. .

Any thoughts on the above guys?
