I just asked that question as in your last message you implied that you knew me which I find rather concerning as all my details should be private and this board covers the whole of the uk so there are millions of chemists and millions of part time workers with children. I just found what you said rather concerning of my identity?0 -

True, each day of leave is only 5 hours. I didn't consider that.0 -
You have posted almost exactly the same post on another board. What were the chances of two exactly the same problems happening within days. There were a few other details on the other board that you included, and the type of retail was relevant. So no, I didn't imply I knew you. I asked you a question and explained why I asked you that question. Your other post also explained that he had already said that alternative hours would not be accepted. So there was little point in people here trying to suggest better hours without the full story.Sangie595

Sorry sangie595 it was when you said if you are who I think you are that made me think you personally knew me.
Just a bit more information then as I haven't explained the full story, there isn't shifts as such, the other counter assistant who has been working for him for 6yrs who is on maternity leave did not work the hours I'm working and the fact my boss says his busiest hours are between 3/7 doesn't make sense if she did not work those hours before. Yes since she has been on maternity leave the shop has got a lot busier and yes between the hours of 3 to around 5 you get the after school run and people finishing work to collect their prescriptions so I understand that. However what I don't understand and what I feel is unfair is now the other lady is finishing maternity leave then why has he just taken the days and hours she said she will come back to do as it doesn't suit the needs of the shop? Also just because someone is returning from maternity leave does not give them the immediate right to dictat them reducing their hours and changing the days and hours they worked it should have been negotiated and discussed and he should have talked to her about the hours he needs the shop covered. Also the hours/days she is coming back to do doesn't help the fact that if I'm off sick or on holiday she has made it clear that she won't cover or do any other hours so that's not helping him. He constantly points out to me about cover in the shop during busy times so why is he not expecting the same help from this other member of staff, none of it makes sense. I believe because she is a strong character and I have heard her spray at him (not to him) she is very controlling and he just bends over backwards. Because I am a bit of a push over and quiet I feel he takes his frustration out on me. There have been many times he has wanted to pop out and at the last moment (around 6-30 at night half hour before I'm due to leave) he has asked me to stay an extra hour and I have, every time he has asked me to do extra hours again I have.
My suggestion of reducing my hours giving him the hours the other lady has reduced and the hours I reduce extra hours to employ another part time member of staff to cover the late afternoons early evenings also having 3 of us part time will give him cover for sickness/holidays and won't cost him extra money because we are cutting our hours.
I too have run my own busisnesses in the past including a pub and a shop so I am looking at the business needs. The trouble is it doesn't matter how many counter staff he has the shop has to have a qualified pharmacist in at all times and this is his biggest problem as the shop is open 7am to 11pm everyday so he is stressed and tired as he only has two other part time pharmacists who cover 3nights a week for him but in the 3nights he should be getting some rest he is then studying a further law degree, he is also a member of the town council so attending meetings and he is also a preacher on Sundays which isn't my fault he has taken on all these other responsibilities and is constantly moaning that he is tired?? Yes I could go and he could get someone else in to do my hours but he will encounter exactly the same problems as you are not going to find a member of staff who will never have a days sickness or who will not ask to use their yearly allocated holidays.
I am trying to help him and his business but because he is so tired and stressed he is becoming aggressive and making a lot of mistakes which you can't afford to do in that position. Everytime he says he will have a meeting with me to discuss everything he cancels it because he is tired or too busy. I have had clients complain about things as well and certain laws are not being adheard to butting the business at risk.
But how do I deal with a human being who is tired and stressed and is taking all that out on me. I don't want to leave as I love my job and I know that me reducing my hours and taking on a 3rd part time member would be a big help but if he won't listen then what can I do. Also what do I do about my 17days holiday remaining which have to be taken by the end of December if he is not letting me take holiday and is now saying I'm not entitled to any??0 -

So if as per my contract which says I'm entitled to 33 days per year which includes bank holidays and their holiday year runs from Jan to Dec and I started on the 6th may could someone just show me how I work out what I'm entitled to this year please?
I'm presuming you work it out by saying I'm entitled to 33 days per year divide that by 12 which gives 2.75 days a month so from may to December that's 8months x by 2.75 gives me 22 days holiday this year to which I have taken 5 days leaving me 17 days to take before the end of December? Am I correct in that calculation?
So if my boss if refusing to let me take those 17 days does he have to pay me for them instead or can he say as I haven't taken them (I haven't taken them as every time I ask for a days holiday he says no) that I loose them??0 -
Have you not worked any Bank Holidays as this would have to come off the amount you've got left to take.
Whilst I can see that your solution may work, he may feel that having three part time assistants, as well as 2 part time pharmacists would just add to the pressure in an ironic sort of way.
As you are aware there are employees that may be of the same grade as you but have more clout that you. The trick is not to make them the enemy as the boss will always side with them0 -

That's very true!!! But I'm a nice hard working person and always have been. Guess this is a big lesson in life for me and like you all say I need to leave. However as a single mum there doesn't seem to be any child friendly jobs out there. Funny really as the government want single mums back out to work but are not providing child friendly hours and the situation seems to be getting worst. They say there are more rights for employees but there are not I'm afraid :-(0 -
