I would give it up OP.

Relationships bring lots of challenges & trials.

It's hard enough to make it without the obstacles you have with his family.

They will always be his family. It would likely be even worse if you had children.

Well I think everyone & every comment on here has raised points that have all gone through my mind at one point or another, that's what makes it all the more difficult.

The comments regarding "low intelligence" while they may seem harsh are very true. The whole experience has really opened my eyes to the Islamic faith, and I find it incredible that people in the west in this day and age still live like they are in the dark ages. You just wouldn't believe some of what's happened...there was the time when he went home and they ambushed him with the Imam from the Mosque to "exercise him of the devils inside him" because he's gay and that's just one example.

So there lies the conundrum. I've really just been sitting it out but I suppose I could be doing the same in ten years time.

You've never met or spoken to any of his family so you don't know how intelligent they are.

Being homophobic although obviously wrong doesn't make you stupid.

Yes it does. Tolerance is a sign of intelligence. Intolerance is a sign of low intelligence.

I am tolerant of religious people as long as they don't affect my life. Unfortunately, fanatically religious people feel that only they are correct and have to impose their views on everyone else.

As the coffee mug says, you don't have to be stupid to believe that your son is going to hell for dating a woman who doesn't believe in the sky fairy, but it helps.

Unless you're passionately in love with him, as in willing to go through anything for him, walk away. Don't even ask him to choose between his family and you, if he'd chosen you he'd have stopped ringing his mum for his weekly dose of brimstone months ago.

The OP's a man. Doesn't make any difference of course but it's worthwhile being accurate.

No it's not, this is the sort of slogan people who aren't very intelligent use to pretend they are intelligent.

History has shown there are many incredibly intelligent people who are not remotely tolerant. As a example look at some of the nazi scientists during WW2. Incredibly intolerant and yet were scientifically brilliant in innovations like the V2 rocket. So much so many of them were moved over to the US after the war and had their crimes quietly hushed up.

All religion was invented to control the peasants so they would not revolt and also to steal money from them by making them feel guilty.. Anyone with even moderate intelligence can see that.

84% of people in the world have faith.

I find your argument ridiculous that because they have a faith 84% of the world's population has a below moderate intelligence.

I would actually use this argument as a reason to question your own intelligence ;)

But were these intelligent scientist forced to do the work they did? I think they probably were. Yes, there will always be exceptions, but in general, intolerance is a sign of low intelligence.

But most of them are not fanatical. A lot of intelligent people have faith but very few of them will be fanatical. And if they are intelligent then they will realise that religion was invented to control the masses which is what I said.

And where did I say that I was intelligent?
