    Colin_Maybe,

I did about 5 months ago, yes. Got quoted about £345 - but they have offered discounts since then.

Not cheap (to me anyway) but only you can decide whether it's worth it to you given your circumstances.

I'm not sure quite how the leased lines work? Do they fit a cabinet outside themselves and if so would you then in the future be able to get 'regular' BB from other companies?

It's possible there is a fibre node (not part of the FTTC infrastructure ) close to your property, maybe a nearby business stumped up for a leased line in the past , and you could benefit from the fact that a node ( a fibre distribution point) was provided for them when their leased line was installed, with spare fibres available for the 'next' customer , it's not uncommon for a business to pay thousands of ££££££'s to get fibre and the business next door gets a bargain, fibre for hundreds of ££'s as the first company paid the to get fibres to the area.
A leased line is fibre to the property, and would (currently) be a blown fibre connection, and a fibre can be blown quite some distance from the node ( typically in excess of 1km) from the node ,it's primarily a business offering, but if leased line providers are prepared to offer a residential type service , that's entirely up to them.
I believe OR recently reduced the price of lease lines, but I would have thought any 'price' would be subject to survey, as the cable the fibre is blown into, needs to be installed right upto the property (normally into duct, which may have to be provided, as well as possibly providing jointing chambers etc,) and the customer pays for this infrastructure to be installed as a one off install cost, and needs to be agreed before OR embark on its provision as that work can be costly

The 290Gb is an average UK family download amount.

I can't help but think this is where all the problems stem from !

Yeah with a family of 3 kids I can believe it with all their gadgets.

I'm sure if you were careful and use it carefully (no iplayer or similar) it would be under 100Gb.

Maybe the answer is ADSL and a sim. Have some devices connect to the ADSL wifi which don't need speed. and only connect the sim WIFI for business or when speed is required.

It's worth a go as it can't cost much to give it a go.

You don't seam willing to try it

Your 'solution' appears to be to use it less? I don't think that's what he is looking for really.

I'm not sure what else the OP is expecting.

I think the important word in the leased line blurb is that little "may"...
Our partners may also be able to offer:

For somebody wanting to use around the 300GB supposed UK average I think the investigations on broadband provision should have been made 6 months ago before moving into a place with only low grade ADSL available.

To 'try' it would involve commiting to a 24 month contract costing £57 per month...

    Really helpful, thanks...

  • I suppose I was hoping that someone on here could get me the ear of those that do the infrastructure for broadband, so that I could understand and perhaps find out if it is viable to undertake some of the work myself, (such as digging trenches or laying the cables etc), to help lower the costs. I still find it absurd that a survey costs £2500 - without anyone else to provide competition, its hardly a fair quote? Its 2.54Km from the nearest Fibre cabinet or 3Km from the next one, (which is in the next village alone and would be simple to connect to with minimum disruption/work, (entirely country lanes, just one bridge to get from A to B).

Thanks for all your comments - its been informative.
