As this comes up on a semi regular basis with this hotel I would think that TO could and should take steps by warning the hotel owners that if this keeps happening they would stop using it for guests from the UK but we all know that given the right "rate" per room/guest they will carry on sending people year after year knowing that on the times when health issues happen they can just wash their hands {no pun intended} of the problem.
I agree that the problem SHOULD have cleared by the time {if} the OP chooses to go and I know that what other guests do is {most of the time} beyond the control of the hotel/pool staff but it must still play on the minds of people that have booked to go within a short space of time of it happening.
  • It is the Hotel and TO that are saying the cause is people crapping in the pool BUT if you read further into reviews by people that have stayed there there are lots of comments about terrile sewage smells....It is very easy to blame guests to divert the blame.Cryptosporidium is very difficult to get rid of. Chlorine or beach will not remove the disease, Emptying and cleaning the pools is Not going to get rid of the problem. The whole hotel needs to be closed and treated. They are covering up the problem and not addressing it. The hotel and TO are putting peoples lives at risk just to make a fast buck. This has been going on since 2010 at this hotel.

It is the Hotel and TO that are saying the cause is people crapping in the pool BUT if you read further into reviews by people that have stayed there there are lots of comments about terrile sewage smells. Most countries, especially the canaries have different sewage systems. Unless you are a specialist within faecal matter and its disposal, it is purely opinion (and does not take into account guest behaviour).

It is very easy to blame guests to divert the blame. Again, unless you can prove significantly that anything else is to blame, it is purely opinion.

Cryptosporidium is very difficult to get rid of. No, a simple filtration kit will do it, in both swimming and drinking water. You can even buy them to take with you.

Chlorine or beach will not remove the disease, Emptying and cleaning the pools is Not going to get rid of the problem. Do you have specific experience of this? As simple filtration, along with meticulous cleaning should sort it out.

The whole hotel needs to be closed and treated. That is your opinion, not the opinion of the local authorities who are responsible for health in destination.

They are covering up the problem and not addressing it. The hotel and TO are putting peoples lives at risk just to make a fast buck.Crypto isn't usually bad. Just boil your water, have good personal hygiene and use a filter system if you feel it necessary.

This has been going on since 2010 at this hotel.

Please address the points above. You don't seem like the kind of person who has several degrees in multiple fields along with relevant experience.
  • As someone that has been going to the Canaries for 26 years the comments about terrible sewage smells are about right. Often the smell comes from the watering system used for watering the trees and plants, sometimes it comes from the way the sewage is dealt with. Pungent sewage smells are quite common.

    1. You do not need to be an expert in faecal matter and disposal to know what to know what sewage smells like.

    2. And the same goes for the Hotel blaming guest.

    3. Do your research as you are incorrect and making yourself look silly.

    4. As above

  • I actually thought this forum was for help and advice. All I asked was ''What are my options apart from losing my money?''.

I was also hoping to highlight an issue that may have or might affect others so more people don't suffer.

If you don't have any helpful sensible constructive advice please just don't bother commenting with you self absorbing dribble & poppycock.

    1. You do not need to be an expert in faecal matter and disposal to know what to know what sewage smells like. And as the poster above stated, it is very common in the canaries due to the lack of freshwater sources in small islands in an ocean.

    2. And the same goes for the Hotel blaming guest. If the guest was to blame, then they were to blame. I've seen logs dropped in pools, it happens, and fairly frequently - moreso in child friendly resorts.

    3. Do your research as you are incorrect and making yourself look silly. Not making myself look silly, but my 4 year biomedicine degree comes in handy here. Simple filtration sorts it out.

Google: cdc gov crypto - CDC is canada. This is a UK website. Perhaps if you take basic health precautions, as advised in all countries (even your own), then you should be fine.

Thank you for taking the time for your Unhelpful illinformed useless advice
Considering I have 10 years experience and a first class degree in a very relevant subject, I wouldn't say it was unhelpful, ill informed (which is two words btw) or unhelpful. If you choose to put yourself at risk then that is your issue, not your tour operator.

This is a public forum. You have been given correct advice, the simple fact is you don't want to take it. Thomson will NOT give you any money back, move your holiday or "take precautions" as the local health authority in destination is monitoring the situation as they are required to do. If you choose to ignore this, and all other information, then that is your choice; but nobody will recompense you for your choice not to go.

And I don't appreciate some internet troll throwing insults around - maybe you should have a long hard look in the mirror, as you words are always a reflection of who you are, not the person who gains your ire.

What are my options apart from losing my money?

Your only option apart from losing money is to take the holiday.

And if you are nicer to the strangers you meet there than you are to the ones on this forum, you might even have a good time!
  • Part of the problem is that people who have got cryptosporidium just go straight back in the pool after they think they are better and just add to the possibility of others contracting it. They should not go in a swimming pool until 14 days after their symptoms have gone. Even those that have had diarrhoea shouldn't go in the pool for at least 48 hours after symptons have disappered. Holidaymakers tend not to shower properly, if at all, before or after going in a swimming pool, which can lead to them spreading the contamination.

If guests were a little more fastidious about their own personal hygiene it would go a long way to preventing the contamination and spread of all sorts of medical issues that seem to becoming more prevalent in hotels these days. Or is it that the ambulance chasing no win no fee firms are becoming more prevalent and are encouraging people to make up sickness in order to claim compensation?
