Hotel with cryptosporidium

PLEASE HELP!! I booked a hotel in Tenerife to stay on 2nd December 2016 but 3 days ago an article in the Sun newspaper said this hotel had cryptosporidium. I obviously do not want to stay there anymore and put my family at risk especially as I have a baby but Thomson is refusing to change our hotel or cancel the booking. What are my options apart from losing my money?

The Sun is hardly a credible news source, What's the name of the Hotel ?

    I'm guessing its this story:-

    https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2200148/dozens-of-brits-struck-down-with-crippling-diarrhoea-bug-at-first-choice-tenerife-resort-after-guests-defecated-in-the-pools/

If the outbreak was caused by guests crapping in the pools, then it should easily be dealt with by emptying and disinfecting the pools before your get there.

If the pool is still closed when you get there, you should be asking for some compensation. Perhaps Thomson could bus you to a different hotel with a pool.

What a pity Tenerife isn't close to the sea, which is a more hygenic option for swinnimg.

Have they moved it, last time I was there it was an island surrounded by the sea?:p

I thought that too, but given the necessity of a swimming pool perhaps we are both wrong. Surely no one would fly 2000 miles to a beach resort only to sit by a swimming pool all day and swim in other people's dirt?

Hmm you could be right, only time I was there was work related, personally not a member of the beach and poop brigade, (oops excuse typo meant pool) we prefer a more active holiday. :D

This story has been in a few papers. It looks grim and not somewhere I would be going on holiday at the moment. If you look on TripAdvisor this issue (pooing in pool, sickness etc) has been going on for a while. Not sure where you stand with changing hotel etc. but I'm not surprised you don't want to go!
  • Thank you to all the unhelpful replies.
This issue has been reported in the Sun, the Daily Mail and social media.
I chose this hotel because it was family friendly, and although we will not be spending the entire days by the pool, with 2 small children (10 months and 3 year old) we will use it as going out the whole day would be quite tiring for them (and for us!).
But if it was only a matter of not having access to the swimming pool, it's fine we'd deal with it, but I am mainly concerned because it shows the lack of hygiene accross the entire hotel.
Also I have found out that this hotel had problems with Cryptosporidium in the past, so it clearly is not a one off, which will be sorted in 2 weeks time.
Again if anybody has any helpful suggestion in how to get Thomson to change our hotel, it would be appreciated.

I am sorry but as someone who goes to Tenerife twice a year and have done since 1999 I am sure that even though this has happened more than a few times with that hotel no one I have ever known about that has booked it has managed either to get moved to another hotel or has got their money back.
I think the only way would be is taking them to court but from what I understand with the holiday companies ALL they do is advice holidaymakers to use the soap/ect that is put out for people staying there so I do not think you will stand any chance of Thompson of refunding or moving you to another hotel :0(

    According to the article in The Sun;

    - the outbreak occurred because of guests defecating in the pool.

    - the pools have been closed

    - chemical treatment is underway

    - the local authorities are involved in an investigation

    - health experts are testing the water

    - compensation is being paid for guests affected by the pool closure

    - people are being bussed to other hotels or the beach and given packed lunches

It sounds to me like the tour operator and the hotel are doing everything possible, and it is likely to be back to normal by 2 December, so I'm not surprised Thomson won't let you cancel.
