AMEX Pay now available on AMEX Android app

Hi

I can't find anything on this and didn't see an announcement, but my AMEX Android App updated a day or so back, and I spotted it now has an 'AMEX Pay' option to allow contactless AMEX payments via the AMEX app.

If you use Android Pay, then you will need to make AMEX Pay the default pay and go app.

I think the message here is that with AMEX doing contactless via their own app, AMEX is unlikely to come to the UK via Android Pay.

Nice! I have never installed or used the Amex app (the mobile web site is actually really good). But I have done so now to take advantage of this. No Amex support on Android Pay pretty much ruled it out for me (other than curiosity).

Have you tried it yet? I assume you don't have to be logged into the app for it to function for payments.

I tried it for lunch today (£2, Tesco). While the app did show an acknowledgement, the terminal then invited me to insert my (real) card and PIN. Hopefully that is a one-off.

Looks like the time is right amidst dissenting reviews of Android Pay on Google Play an alternative to make an appearance on Android phones. Not in the app on iOS that I can see but it's not needed because there is Apple Pay.

Unlikely to work in Tesco which is pinning their hopes on PayQwiq. Tragic.

Yeah, Tesco really know how to run banking services, right?

IIRC it's nothing to do with Apple Pay being better than Android Pay; but everything to do with Apple not allowing third parties access to their phone's NFC chip.

Tesco is slow at updating its terminals. The local pound shops around me accept contactless payments, but my nearest huge Tesco store doesn't.

Barclays, Samsung and LG are also battling with Apple Pay and Android Pay. I doubt all will survive.

This thread is about Amex Pay not Apple Pay. In the post you quoted I reported that Amex Pay is not in the iOS Amex app but it's not really needed because on iOS there is Apple pay.

It's not really about Apple Pay being better than Android Pay but that Android Pay gets terrible reviews on Google Play.

Not really the whole story. There is Payqwiq and whatever happened to Windows Pay and whatever happened to Samsung Pay. It would be really funny is Tesco Bank's Payqwiq eclipsed all the others.

It's not really needed on Android devices either because there's Android Pay.

I'm sure Amex would love to include Amex Pay in their iPhone app, but they can't.

Reviewers give an average score of 3.9 out of 5. Many of the down voters seem to be complaining about it not working on modified devices.

One reviewer gave the app five stars and commented "Broken When using tap and pay, it freezes every time after entering pin. Wallet app used to work fine for tap and pay. Android pay app is broken." :rotfl:

Five stars for a broken app?

Same issue for me at Tesco. As well as for TfL, I had to try three times before being able to go through the ticket barrier.

Bet you were popular at rush hour..

I've tried Amex pay a few times, worked in the pub but not in Tesco. Think I'll stick with Android pay as my default for now.
