  • Watching the videos on line, they tend to be used by impatient unforgiving ars*oles who make mountains from molehills.

I agree (from evidence seen on this forum ;)) the ones who post them on YouTube probably are, but most people who have them don't post the footage and just have them as an additional line of defence should something go wrong.

Don't get one. Double-edged sword. If you're suspected of being at fault in any incident the police will no doubt seize the footage.

In a major incident yes and rightly so.

However in a minor bump, no one injured just an insurance dispute, does the person with the dashcam have to hand over the footage to the other party if they would prefer not to? And how does the other party know if the car has a dashcam? I was in a minor accident not my fault I don't have a dashcam, and even if I did it wouldn't have helped however if the other party had one it would prove their fault, should I have checked this, how would I tell and could my insurance force them to hand it over if there was one?

I looked in to getting a dash cam for a week or two before I bought mine. I think its called a Thinkware H50. I plan to have it hardwired soon so it will monitor the car on my drive, at work, etc. It has the ability to do that, not all dash cams do.

For people saying they don't fancy a wire hanging down the windscreen. My dash cam is right up high behind the rear view mirror so you can't see it and the cable just runs along, behind the vanity mirror, behind the grab handle and then down the B post and across the floor to the cigarette lighter. When I start the car up it comes on automatically.

When I have it hardwired I'll use a different cable and it will be put behind the roof lining so totally hidden.

I read loads of reviews via Google and car magazines then when you've narrowed it down to a few go on YouTube and watch videos of that particular dash cam's footage so you can see how clear the film is. That is one of the most important things, if you cant read a numberplate then it's pretty pointless having one.

I always feel better knowing I have it running, watching, recording the idiots

I have no idea about dashcams - except that they run on a "memory loop"
    Any advice welcome ...

I pulled away at a green traffic light, not accelerating fast and the car from the left either decided to totally ignore the red lights or simply didn't see the two sets of lights and proceeded to pull out as if I wasn't there.

This happened to me last weekend. No idea how the clown next to me thought he could turn left from that lane. He should have remained to my right all the way into the exit I took.

And you did absolutely nothing but continue straight towards him as if he wasn't there, for over two whole seconds after he clearly passed the lights. Then you stopped, seemingly surprised. Hell, he reacted more quickly and positively than you appeared to.
