Tesco hackers used mobiles to launder haul - The Sunday Times
    http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/tesco-hackers-used-mobiles-to-launder-haul-92tjftd57
Raiders used contactless accounts to spend stolen £2.5m in US and Brazil

The criminals behind the Tesco Bank cyber-heist went on a spending spree in shops in the US and Brazil to launder their ill-gotten gains, The Sunday Times can reveal.

The thieves used data stolen from the British lender to set up contactless payment accounts on smartphones, sources said.

In a co-ordinated raid last weekend, they bought thousands of low-priced goods from stores, swiping their mobile phones at the tills. Many of the fraudulent transactions are understood to have been made in American electricals retailer Best Buy.

The gang took £2.5m from 9,000 Tesco Bank customers before the lender detected suspicious activity and froze all online payments.
  • I really feel for all the victims of this, and it is an inconvenience - but at the end of the day you'll get your money back.

The scale of this attack is phenomenal, and Tesco can certainly do more to protect themselves and their customers - but to obtain that much data and spend it that quickly probably takes as much if not more planning and resource than the bank has to invest in fraud.

I feel more sorry for people who are victims of sales scams, who send money in good faith and who can often lose their life savings.
Fraudsters are like Pokemon - Gotta catch em all.
  • Has anyone else not received a new debit card from tesco bank? When I called them when the hack originally happened they told me that new cards would be sent automatically to all affected customers. That was over 2 weeks ago and I haven't received a new card. I've already moved all my money elsewhere but still feel slightly edgy as I still use the internet saver accounts for the easy DDs.

When I spoke to them a few days ago they stated that affected customers had originally been told (including myself) that new direct debit cards would be issued, however, as a result of their investigation they no longer believe this is necessary so new cards are not now being issued.

We had text message re both our affected accounts two days ago stating that new debit cards were on their way and to contact Tesco Bank if not received within 5 working days. Both cards arrived yesterday.

Maybe it's just the customers who had money taken from their accounts that are getting new cards (I was one of the customers who got the texts saying accounts affected but I didn't actually have money taken......initially was told that new cards would be sent though this was only just after it happened).

My email is my own domain with tescobank@ in front of it. Makes it very obvious where any spam has come from. I very much doubt any increase in spam is due to Tesco fraud. Far more likely to be the run up to Christmas especially if it is mainstream brands - why would they use data hacked from Tesco?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Tesco Bank ‘failed to heed warning on cyberattack’ - The Times
    http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/tesco-bank-failed-to-heed-warning-on-cyberattack-rpgvhrh8j
Security flaw enabled fraudsters to steal millions

Investigators are looking into whether Tesco Bank ignored a warning about a security flaw in its payment system that allowed fraudsters to steal millions of pounds from the accounts of thousands of its customers.

Officials at the Financial Conduct Authority and the National Crime Agency believe that Tesco might have failed to act on an industry-wide warning from Visa a year ago. They believe that hackers using specially designed computers were able to take advantage of a so-called Code 91 glitch to access the debit card details.

The glitch meant that criminals were able to repeatedly “ping” payment sites with random debit card numbers until they found a match with a customer’s card number, expiry date and three-digit security code.
