Seems to work ok with other sim only providers who don't do credit checks.

    Er...such as?

Bank details = for your Direct Debit to pay every month

Card details = for any initial payment, or if no upfront it's used to verify your ID (these are not stored in anyway usually)

Credit = you ARE taking credit, you have a SIM/phone capable of incurring additional charges other than your standard monthly fee e.g. calling premium 08 numbers, going abroad using data, texting competitions etc. Or even going over any allowances as part of the tariff. All of this incurs cost immediately, which is chargeable on your next bill. You can not pay upfront for something you haven't incurred a charge for...

If you feel conned for some bizarre reason, then go buy a PAYG SIM and be done with yourself.

Just taken out a rolling 30 day sim only with another provider. No credit check, payment up front, only one payment method. Am happy.

Still don't understand why ID mobile require both DD and CC details.

I don't know who 'they' are but for Plusnet (probably all contract sims) you pay in advance for the line rental, any extraneous costs would be added to the next bill. So you do need a Visa or Credit card to join.

So why do you need a credit card as well as direct debit?

    Paying up front?

You know that’s not how contracts work, don’t you?

How does the network know in advance you want to download the last season of Desperate Housewives which takes 25GB of data or phone your cousin in Australia for a 17 hour chat?

You use the service and are billed for your use at the end of the billing cycle, if that doesn’t suit you then you’re a PAYG user.

As Colin and Sparx have already said, the CC is the ID check to get connected, the DD is for the monthly payments.

    Not heard of capping?
  • If you use anything other than calls, texts and data which are within the included allowances, it's worth checking these tariffs carefully.
I just shopped around and found a good looking tariff. However when I checked the cost of a call from here to France it was £1 a minute vs 2p per minute on my current SIM.
None of the switching sites I've found make it easy to find this kind of info.

All the big name monthly contract call abroad prices are terrible, I wouldn't even consider using them for that, in fact I wouldn't worry what they charge as I would look for alternatives. I've got an EE payg I use, text call abroad to 150.
