I do feel for Westie and the other bank workers amongst us, for I fear once we are totally plastic, there will be many an argument occurring outside and inside financial institutions everywhere! xxx

I am not looking forward to the July 18, when the £10 change over on the anniversary of Jane Austen's death...

I think I will going potty by 2020 when the £20 change....

    Ahhhhh

Try not to get too excited everyone, but I have decided to open my pot today.

If I manage to get to the bank later I will be sure to tell you how much I have raised for my friend's wedding gift.

I potted £7.04 to it today so it is as swollen as it will get.

Eeeek, I'm excited to hear your total, Florence! What a lovely and generous gift!

Westie, I feel your pain! I thought the new tenners weren't here til September. But do you know why it will then be 2020 before the new £20 is launched? Is it so you poor bank workers will at least have one note that is easy to work with for a little longer!?

Nothing for my pot today, but I plan to withdraw a couple of fivers tomorrow to pop in there and chip away a little more at my target total! :) xxx

I dislike the £5 notes because I cannot easily fold them and put them in my little purse as they keep springing out when I open it. The old ones stayed there behind my cards until I needed them.

I tend to find that folding them once (or twice, if needed) and then putting a large denomination coin in the fold weighs the £5 down so that it doesn't make a bid for freedom spring out of your purse the next time. It doesn't have to be a coin, either - I use a bank/points card if I've run out of coins in my purse and only have notes, and that works too. I hope that helps :)

I absolutely love the new £5ers, but having done the land down under a few times and having relatives who live there I was already used to plastic money, so wasn't that big of a jolt to me. I do find them easier to stack in my purse, but having picked £5ers to come out of the cash machine in the bank this week and having one that must have been bloomin ironed it had that many perfect creases in it which stopped the machine pushing the notes up like its supposed to so I had to dig my money out the ejection hole, I can see how they are a royal pain in the back side for bank workers!

Yay, someone else who likes the new fivers! :D On the plus side, would paper notes have survived a biting machine that made you dig them out? So perhaps the plastic helped protect your fivers from getting ripped...

My first thought was that someone in the Bank of England had the thought of, "Oh why don't we release the £20 notes in 2020? That way nobody will forget the date!" :p

However, a lot of people complained about the tallow (animal fat) in the fivers and IIRC, the Bank of England had already started printing plastic £10s to stockpile so nothing could be done about that, but perhaps the delay is to give them time to find alternatives?

Oh - and I'm not sure if you realised, but there aren't any plans to change the £50 notes to plastic. So in theory, you could still continue potting all the plastic notes you get by withdrawing £50s from the bank, using them for your shopping, and potting the plastic/coin change :rotfl:

    --

Today I have managed to accidentally get 4 new £1s to pot :o I was planning to spend the entirety of a £10 note I had... unfortunately my first purchase was £1.50 and as there were no fivers left I got given a 50p coin and 8 x £1s, 4 new and 4 old. At least my pot will be well fed by November at this rate :A

I have returned from the bank, which is N@twest where I used for the second time (the first was last year on November 3rd!) the big swirly washing machine like coin sorter.

    Drum roll please...

    I raised £90

exactly! If I hadn't seen it for myself I wouldn't have believed it

Word of caution, it will probably be fixed some time before the cut off date but the big swirly washing machine like coin sorter doesn't accept the new £1 coin yet!

I have a plastic fiver in my wallet and at least £5 in my account so I will round it up to £100 for my friend. She is my bestie.

Wahey, well done Florence! I'm sure your friend will be really touched by your generous gift. Great potting!

I'd heard about the possible animal fat thing but I didn't think that would negate quite such a delay! But hey, it means we still have some plastic and some paper so I can pot all my plastic and keep using my paper notes to pay tiny, tiny amounts of money and get lots of shiny change! Hee hee, I'm going to get banned from all the shops in my town!

Has anyone ever got a £50 note out of an ATM? I can't recall ever getting one, but I suppose they dish those out if you're withdrawing quite a chunk. I don't really do that too often because there's never that much in my account to withdraw! Bloomin' first of the month just keeps coming round!!! xxx

Have you ever tried to use a £50 in a shop? or pay for anything that isnt a builder or for a birthday card?

The idea is good but I don't think I will get far if I tried to by my work coffee with £50 notes lol...

Unless you mean in self service? but some of my local ones don't take them due to forgery, which I think is why they are not going plastic as they were only changed three years ago.

They are changing in July on the anniversary of Jane Austen's death, as the new plastic will have her face on it, that said that is the idea but these things can change, but yes there is a issue with fats in the notes but this wont be changing in the £5 or £10 due to the production has already started

Morning potters, one very death warmed up Jakes-mum reporting in!

Ahh thank you for asking Cazzie, DD is doing very well with the toe, it still looks a bit manky but is definitely looking muh better than before she had it done.

Well done Florence on your £90 potting! a very generous gift for your bestie!

Im not sure the old £5ers would have survived my digging them out the new machines (money now pops upwards not forwards like the old machines) so am mighty glad they are so robust now! I spent the offending wrinkly one but the nice pristine ones it was holding in the machine got carefully saved :D

No pennies yet today, much too early for me. Do need some potatoes for tonights tea so will see if I get anything pottable then. A happy (but cold) potty day to you all :)
